GFriend was one of the more popular groups when it debuted in 2015. They were in the league of currently successful girl groups like TWICE and Blackpink. In 2016, GFriend held the record of becoming the girl group with the most music show wins in one year with 29 wins. They also became the first girl group to be invited to the Grammys for a masterclass. They were the first girl group to be nominated at 2015 MTV EMAs alongside BTS and GOT7 and had viral hits like ‘Me Gustas Tu’ and ‘Mago’.

And while they were from a small label Source Music, it was acquired by HYBE, the parent company of BTS. With GFriend making it big despite being from a small company, fans expected them to get even bigger now that their label was under a successful multi-national conglomerate. Unfortunately, after three comebacks in 2020, they disbanded in 2021. And now, according to SinB, who is now a part of Viviz along with two other GFriend members, it seems that the group did not even know they were disbanding.

SinB regrets GFriend’s last comeback

Last year, fans noticed that Source Music was trying to trademark GFriend and accused them of trying to sabotage the girls. If the trademark application goes through, the girls will not be able to reunite as GFriend and perform their songs unless they team up with HYBE who will have all the rights. And with SinB’s latest words, fans’ arguments have strengthened and are blaming HYBE, the parent company.

The official statement shared that the girls left the label after their contracts expired. However, in a YouTube clip that is now going viral, SinB shared that GFriend did not know that their ‘Mago’ era in November 2020 would be the last time they would be having a comeback. She explained that she regrets their last comeback as she was depressed, “I was really down. I didn’t realize that it would be our last [comeback]. So, I kept singing and dancing in that state of slump. When I look back on it, I regret it a little.” Eunbi too was struggling at that time.

GFriend to reunite

It seems that the girls did not want to disband as SinB recalled, “I couldn’t tell the fans that we are not GFriend anymore. So, you can see that a month before the [disbanding] news came out, we were crying on VLive. On the day of the disbandment…all of us came out of the room crying. Last year was especially difficult for us.”

Fans were further touched that Viviz saw themselves as an extension of GFriend with SinB explaining that they do not have a leader now as GFriend’s leader Sowon will always lead them. SinB is also confident of a reunion as she ended the video by saying, “I think GFriend will unite someday, sooner or later…I believe that this is just temporary. Someday, we will reunite.”

'So heartbreaking'

Sad fans made tweets like, “Y'all I can't,, I remember the time sowon and eunha cried on vlive watching to gfriend performances,,,, AND YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO TELL ME THEY KNEW THEY WERE DISBANDING DURING THAT??? I'M CRYING SO BAD????”

Another posted, “No cause sinb confirmed viviz didn't choose a leader bcs they believe gfriend will come back again so they don't need another leader, sowon is enough :') it proves they're so loyal to each other.”

One positive fan added, “It’s so heartbreaking hearing SinB say how she lost her confidence around Fever. And that they didn’t know MAGO would be their last comeback either. I really do believe that they’ll comeback as 6 sometime in the future, it may be 20 years from now but I know it’ll happen.”

Another said, “I hate sudden disbandments cause 95% of the time it’s clear the members didn’t want it and would’ve wanted to keep going if it was up to them.”
