Amazon shared the stunning new trailer for ‘Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power'’ at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego and made everyone excited. The trailer was filled with action sequences, stunning visuals, and a lot of destruction, which gave us an idea that the series will be filled with a lot of heartbreaks. However, there’s one thing that made everyone curious Anson Boon’s first look at what seems to be a version of Sauron.

If are a fan of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ book series, then you’ll know Sauron is the biggest villain in the Middle-Earth saga and a symbol of darkness. In the ‘LOTR’ trilogy by Peter Jackson, Sauron is shown as a large humanoid figure clad in black armor when he forges and possesses the Ring but appears only as the disembodied Eye throughout the rest of the storyline.

As far as 'The Rings of Power’ is concerned, the newest trailer showed the return of evil as whispers of Sauron float across the Middle-Earth. However, Sauron that we see in the latest trailer is only one of the villain’s many forms. In the trailer, he is shown sowing seeds of fire, lurking in a gray cloak, and generally looking like he’s up to no good. Boon’s first look at the mysterious character got a lot of reactions and they rushed in to fill in all the blanks, believing that they just got their first look at Sauron. Although there’s no confirmation that Boon is indeed playing Sauron on the show, a lot of social media users have already started criticizing Boon’s look at the big, bad villain.

The reactions are really extreme. Some people loved the look because they know that Sauron is a shapeshifter and the look feels like someone who would do all the dirty work after mesmerizing them with his innocence. On the other hand, some started comparing him to Eminem.

One of the social media users said, “Sauron in ROP looks really bad. He’s my favorite villain and I’m VERY disappointed with that. Even in a cut scene in LOTR 3, he looked much better and more canon, thank god the Amazon series is NOT canon for the Jackson universe.” Another user wrote, “I’m not a fan of this look. The pale, white-haired, Nordic look is not what I imagine when thinking of a dark ominous villain. I have high hopes but low expectations for this series. Everything made now is more focused on being politically correct, rather than just being good.”

“He looks like Eminem and sounds like Voldemort,” said another user. “Wtf is this design? The Dark Lord Slim Shady?” said another user. “Sauron is supposed to be beautiful, you guys really can't get a single thing right,” wrote another one. “Oh look it's the Real slim Sauron... please stand up, please stand up,” said another user.

However, there were many who said that this might be one of Sauron’s forms that he might use to trick the key players they need in order to forge the Rings of Power. One fan wrote, “He looks like he’s capable of telling the sweetest lies and committing the foulest crimes…Sauron, ladies and gents.” Another fan noted, “I actually like Sauron design, he’s a non-binary icon.”

It’s yet to be confirmed if Boon is indeed playing Sauron in the series. If yes, then he is definitely not the armored warrior or the flaming eyeball that ‘LOTR’ fans are familiar with. But there’s one more thing that should be said here because if the show is based on the Second Age, then it means he would be known as Annatar and had the power of taking changing his form whenever he wanted to. Also, the creative team behind the series has already made it clear that Sauron will be seen in “multiple forms” during the series as he tries to rule over the entire Middle-Earth.

Well, it will be interesting to see how many forms of Sauron we are going to see in the series. Till then, let’s just wait and keep guessing if Boon’s aforementioned look is one of them or not.

‘Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ premieres exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, September 2.
