In what comes as a surprise to many, 'Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated' producer Tony Cervone confirmed recently that the classic 'Scooby-Doo!' Character Velma Dinkley was in fact created as a gay woman.

Cervone had to weigh in to explain the theory behind Velma’s sexuality when two Instagram users were caught debating over Velma’s relationship status on the cartoon show. To deliver more clarity on whether Velma was a heterosexual character who was in love with a straight Shaggy or bi-sexual with interest in Marcie, Cervone took it upon himself to explain to fans what Velma represented.

He wrote in the comments, "I've said this before, but Velma in Mystery Incorporated is not bi. She's gay. We always planned on Velma acting a little off and out of character while she was dating Shaggy because that relationship was wrong for her and she had unspoken difficulty with the why.”

“There are hints about the why in that episode with the mermaid, and if you follow the entire Marcie arc it seems as clear as we could make it 10 years ago. I don't think Marcie and Velma had time to act on their feelings during the main timeline, but post reset, they are a couple. You can not like it, but this was our intention,” he added further.

Unable to contain their excitement, fans quickly took to Twitter to react to Velma’s character being portrayed as a lesbian. One fan wrote, “Coming out of my break to say happy lesbian pride month to Velma Dinkley who had just been confirmed as Lesbian. Congrats on coming out queen.”

Meanwhile, many fans established that they were already shipping Velma and Daphne. One Twitter user wrote, “the way scooby doo expected us to believe #velma and daphne are straight when they're literally the walking lesbian flag.”

“VELMA IS CANONICALLY A LESBIAN THIS IS THE BEST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO ME” added another.

Some fans also noted that they were convinced Velma and Marcie were a couple. “scooby doo has ALWAYS been one of my favorite shows and I've always seen Marcie and Velma as a couple, I'm so glad one of the developers confirmed this” tweeted one.
