Can you really ever leave your past behind?
The focus of the second episode is Emily the present. She is getting ready to meet with Gogo the next day to get her phone. She sees her therapist before this meeting. Emily discusses how much she has changed in the past few years and how she is now prepared to stop going to therapy. The therapist talks about Emily's wish to reside in a Caribbean neighborhood, which given her upbringing could be upsetting. Emily insists that she has improved, though. But is that really true, is what you can't help wondering.
Gogo meets with Emily and gives her phone back. During this unremarkable meeting, she doesn't say anything to the potential murderer and goes to work. Sunita, a friend of Emily's, and Emily discuss the experience. Sunita advises Emily to move on from her past, but Emily is unable to do so and we see her investigate Alison's death online, uncovering horrible things
The episode's final flashback also depicts Edwin and Gogo's earlier illicit endeavors. In one flashback, the dynamic team was busted for selling stolen jeans. They were apprehended by a detective who advised them to pursue careers in tourism instead, which they later did at the hotel. Despite leaving the criminal world behind, Edwin's objectives remained unwavering.
How was Alison's body found?
In the first flashback of the episode, Alison's body is found by the waterfall on the island of Faraway Cay, and the show concludes with the police recovering it. As her body is carried back to the beach, her parents sob. Then, in the present, Emily follows the suspect through the streets of the city as she stalks Gogo. The show's twists and turns have left viewers wondering whether Emily will be able to capture Gogo and learn the truth about Alison's death.
The series explores topics like obsession, sorrow, racism, class, and wealth. All this is done by shedding light on the circumstances of Alison's death. We see how her memory haunts characters, be they islanders or non-islanders who knew her. The series' disjointed design makes it difficult to follow because scenes move back and forth between 2005 and 2023 without any clear indication. In its first half, the TV show also has a hard time drawing in viewers or giving the show's many sketchy characters any depth.
The main focus of 'Saint X' is the examination of privilege and the fruitless attempts made by privileged people to escape it. The production fails in its attempt to highlight the captivating aspects of the novel, leaving the audience wanting more.
