The new season of 'Riverdale' got off to a quiet start. There were no menacing Gargoyle goons, nor were there any trace of the sinister Farmies. It was all about honoring Luke Perry's Fred Andrews and the episode does just that by shifting every other plotline to the back. Guess the call was a good one as fans too received the episode warmly. Twitter was filled with RIP messages to Perry and his character Fred. It looked like they shared the grief along with the cast as many of them said it was a hard watch, but has been a good start to the usually dark and subversive intros that have been seen in the previous seasons.
"11 minutes in and already have cried so much," wrote a fan, while another said, "My heart hurts". Fred Andrews has been an instrumental character since the series' inception and his relationship with his son, Archie (KJ Apa) has been a key highlight and fans have already begun missing the inspirational father figure. "Excellent show tonight and an awesome tribute to a true legend," a fan tweeted. For some, it was a beautiful gesture. "Thank you for the beautiful tribute to Luke. Very well done"
"Wow. What a roller coaster of emotions that was. I can’t begin to imagine how difficult it must have been for the cast and crew to write/film/edit this episode. I don’t think I’ve ever cried so much watching an episode of any show. Thank you." opined a fan. "Thank you for letting us viewers have a part in saying goodbye to Luke Perry/Fred Andrews it was very heartbreaking but comforting thank you," said another expressing gratefulness.
Such was the way 'In Memoriam' unfolded that it felt like the real thing for some fans. "I just finished watching. My sister and I couldn’t stop crying. So beautiful and real," a fan remarked. Another fan seconded the thought saying," That had to be the best tribute episode I have ever seen. I cried through all of it. Hats off to the writers. I am sure his family would be proud and he is smiling from above". And then there were a few who couldn't wait for the drama to begin. "Hi, Can u please tell @WarnerChannelLA that we can't stay till 00:34 for a new episode of Riverdale? thank u next," an eager fan tweeted.
'Riverdale' season 4 airs Wednesdays 8 pm on The CW.
