Retta is a famous American actress, author and stand-up comedian. The actress is popular for playing Donna Meagle in NBC's comedy 'Parks and Recreation' and Ruby Hill in NBC's 'Good Girls'. She started as a stand-up comedian in 1996 and after two years, she became a famous fixture in the college comedy touring circuit. In 2004, she had her own special 'Comedy Central Presents'.

The actress has successfully received more than 50 acting credits in various movies and shows, including 'Slackers', 'Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life', 'First Sunday', 'Good Boys', and 'Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce'. Moreover, Retta received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her appearance in the web series 'Vampire Mob' at the 2021 Indie Series Award. She is an author also and wrote the book 'So Close to Being the Sh*t, Y'all Don't Even Know' in 2018. The actress will be now seen as the host of the upcoming HGTV series 'Ugliest House in America.' Retta's early life and education 

Marietta Sangai Sirleaf, popularly known as Retta, was born on April 12, 1970. She spent her childhood playing and growing in Cliffwood Beach and Edison, New Jersey. The actress was the daughter of Liberian parents and her aunt Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was the President of Liberia from 2006 to 2018. In 1988, Retta graduated from Matawan Regional High School in Aberdeen Township, New Jersey. In 1992, she graduated from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, where she was pre-med and graduated by holding a degree in sociology. Retta attended New Apostolic Church and enjoyed spending time with the youth group there, making them laugh.



 

Retta's career and success in the industry 

After graduating from Duke University, Retta started working as a chemist. She performed at Raleigh's Charlie Goodnights Comedy Club in her spare time as a stand-up comedian. Retta also took part and competed in her first TV comedy contest, and received votes from all over the world, thereby winning the contest. She later went to Los Angeles and started touring the college circuit in 1998. After the successful completion of the tour, the actress wanted to enter the industry and started focusing on auditioning for acting roles and later made her debut on the big screen in 2002 in 'Slackers'.



 

During her time on 'Parks and Recreations', Retta also appeared in the movie 'Sex Ed'. In 2020, Retta lent her voice for 'Duck Tales', Disney's XD series and appeared on 'Home Movie'.



 

On Retta deciding to go by one name, she told Essence magazine, "that was me just being lazy. I remember doing stand-up at an open mic a long time ago, and the MC was like, 'Who's next?' I said, Marietta Sirleaf, and he was like 'What?' and I was like, 'Ugh, okay, just Retta.' It stuck with me ever since."
