‘Coolie No 1’: Release date, plot, cast, trailer and all you need to know about the classic Bollywood movie remake

Indian film director David Dhawan’s remake of the 1995 Bollywood comedy movie ‘Coolie No 1’ starring his son, Varun Dhawan, and Sara Ali Khan is all set to spread some festive cheer this Christmas on Amazon Prime Video across 200 countries and territories.

Produced by Vashu Bhagnani, Jackky Bhagnani and Deepshikha Deshmukh, the film also stars legendary comedians Paresh Rawal, Javed Jaffrey, Johnny Lever, Rajpal Yadav and Shikha Talsania among others. 
 
“These are truly exciting times for Indian entertainment,” said David Dhawan. “I am happy that our labor of love will be viewed by a global audience. Sara and Varun had big shoes to fill in and they have done a remarkable job. I’m looking forward to seeing the audience’s reaction to our film.” 

Release date

‘Coolie No 1’ will premiere exclusively on December 25, 2020, on Amazon Prime Video and will be available in 200 countries and territories worldwide.  

Plot

After being insulted by a rich businessman named Rozario, pandit Jai Kishen (Paresh Rawal) teaches him a lesson by getting his daughter married to Raju — a Coolie (an unskilled native laborer in India, China, and some other Asian countries bearing luggage of commuters) posing as a millionaire. Soon Raju’s real identity is exposed but he cooks up a story of having a filthy rich twin.

One lie leads to another and things start to go out of hand. The original movie was released in 1995 and starred Govinda and Karishma Kapoor who were big names in Bollywood in the early '90s.

The protagonist of the movie who is playing the character of coolie Raju is Varun Dhawan. Son of director David Dhawan, Varun made his debut in Bollywood with, ‘Student of the year’ in 2012. Some of his other movies that were a hit in the Hindi film industry were ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’, ‘Judwaa 2’, ‘Dilwale’. The 33-year-old actor is one of India’s highest-paid celebrities and has featured in Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list since 2014.

The character of pandit Jai Kishan is played by comedian and actor Paresh Rawal. Rawal is also an Indian politician affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Party. Actor Sara Ali Khan is playing the character of Pandit’s daughter and Raju’s love interest. Khan debuted in the Hindi film industry with the movie’ Kedarnath’. Sarah was born into the Pataudi family which is an Indian dynasty of nawabs of the former princely state of Pataudi. Both her parents Amrita Singh and Saif Ali Khan are also actors in the Hindi film industry.

The trailer begins with Pandit Jai Kisan saying he always wanted his daughter to get married into a rich family and God has made his dream come true by giving her a “Richie Rich” husband. Varun Dhawan played double roles in the movie, Kuar Raj Pratap Singh who is introduced as the King of Singapore and Coolie Raju. What follows after this is a bunch of shots taken in luxurious locations and big mansions with the lead characters lipsyncing to music, dancing and falling in love and getting married.

In the second half of the trailer, Raju is introduced who claimed to be the brother of Kuar Raj Pratap Singh. Another love story blossoms between Raju and Pandit Jai’s second daughter followed by more songs and dance.
