'Raya and the Last Dragon': Release date, plot, cast, creator and everything else you need to know about the Disney fantasy film

Disney announced its 59th animated film during the D23 Expo in Anaheim, California. 'Raya and the Last Dragon' will follow the adventures of Raya, a young warrior, as she tracks down the last dragon in the world. The setting and art will reportedly be drawing inspiration from Southeast Asian influences and Hong Kong cinema in particular.

Release Date

'Raya and the Last Dragon' will come to theaters in November 2020. 

Plot

Not too much is known about the plot of the upcoming fantasy animated film. All we know so far is that the story will be set in a magical world where dragons are a thing of the past. A young warrior named Raya sets off on an epic adventure to find the last dragon left in the world, who goes by the name Sisu. We'll be bringing you additional details as soon as they become available.

Cast

Cassie Steele

Cassie Steele will be providing the voice of Raya (Getty Images)

The Canadian actress, singer, and songwriter will be providing the voice of Raya. Steele is best known for her roles as Manny Santos on 'Degrassi: The Next Generation' and Abby Vargas on 'The L.A. Complex'.

Awkwafina

Sisu the Last Dragon will be voiced by the 31-year-old actress and rapper. She has received a lot of critical praise for her performances in 'Ocean's 8', 'Crazy Rich Asians', and 'The Farewell'. Awkwafina will soon be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming movie 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings'.

Creator

'Raya and the Last Dragon' will be written by Adele Lim, who was a co-screenwriter on the hit 2018 film 'Crazy Rich Asians'. Lim is a producer, writer, and screenwriter born in Malaysia, who kicked off her Hollywood career with the fantasy series 'Xena: Warrior Princess'. The upcoming movie will be directed by Paul Briggs, who was head of story on 'Frozen', and Dean Wellins. The duo will be making their directorial debuts with the film. 'Raya and the Last Dragon' will be produced by 'Moana' producer Osnat Shurer.
