The second episode of the new series saw continued pushback from Lettie's (Cecilia Suárez) son Mateo(Augusto Aguilera) against Joe (John Ortiz). At the same time, Antonio (Tonatiuh) meets with Margaret (Bellamy Young) as the two continue scheming and informs her that at the party Mateo said a name - 'Carlos Rincón' which saw Joe taken aback. Noting that his father rarely gets rattled, his mother asks him to look into who this mystery man is. We previously saw Mateo threaten Joe with this name and learned that it's Joe's real name from when he came to America as an undocumented immigrant and dangles the knowledge purposely.

Mateo and Joe also get into a bidding war for a piece of land. The son wants to be a winemaker but his father wants him involved in the family business, which sees Mateo subtly threaten Joe with disclosing the hidden knowledge he has. But Joe warns him that if he were to be reported as undocumented, he needs to remember that his mother Lettie as well as Daniela (Natalia del Riego), his friend are undocumented and at risk as well.

The episode also sees a worried Joe at the beginning burning all of his old pictures that connect him to his past and enquires if Lettie did the same herself. But the threat is only growing as Antonio plans to sneakily get it out of his brother at some point. We also see him discover an old car with peeling paint and dried blood under the flooring as we remember it being the car Joe and Lettie came to the vineyard in when they were young. Mateo holds a trump card that can turn the tide as Antonio sniffs around for it. Looks like Joe needs to watch his back more than ever.

'Promised Land' returns with a new episode on Monday at 10/9 C on ABC. You can stream it on Hulu as well.
