'Prodigal Son' Episode 5 shows Malcolm hallucinating The Surgeon as he struggles to decode the mystery behind 'the girl in the box'

In episode 5 titled 'The Trip', Malcolm searches the depths of his mind to unravel the mystery of 'the girl in the box'.

Spoilers ahead for Episode 5 of 'Prodigal Son'

Jessica Whitly (Bellamy Young) indeed wasn't aware of her husband Dr Martin Whitly's (Michael Sheen) murder spree. In the last episode, Malcolm retrieved the evidence tapes from the night of his father's arrest from Gil (Lou Diamond Phillips). The tapes revealed that Jessica had inferred that Martin was having an affair owing to his frequent late nights and cheap perfume, but she would have never guessed that he was a serial killer in disguise.

Jessica also blamed herself for the damage that The Surgeon did. "I should've known. I let him get away with this. I enabled him," she had said in the tape.

But that said, the mystery of the identity of the 'girl in the box' still remains. In episode 5 titled 'The Trip', Malcolm searches the depths of his mind to unravel the mystery of “the girl in the box". But his night terrors are worsening resulting in a lack of sleep. This means that Malcolm's real-life is becoming more and more of a blur. That explains the hallucinations he is shown to have in the promo for the episode.

Going forward, an interesting character development fans are eager to see is that of Malcolm's sister Ainsley's (Halston Sage). Some predict that Malcolm's sister Ainsley's character is going to take a turn to the dark side. After spending the entire episode in what seemed like contemplation over going forward with a "Dr Martin Whitly exclusive" that could do wonders for her career, Ainsley was shown finally giving in. All this seems pretty ironic since she had been warning Malcolm about seeing his father since episode one.

Elsewhere, when the NYPD investigates a homicide they assume is linked to a drug cartel, Malcolm discovers a secret about Dani’s (Aurora Perrineau) past that draws them closer together.

'Prodigal Son' airs on Monday at 9 PM ET/PT.
