'Pillowcase Murders': Here's why Billy Chemirmir, accused of 22 murders, didn't receive death penalty
DALLAS, TEXAS: In its newest true-crime series titled 'Pillowcase Murders’, Paramount+ is documenting Billy Chemirmir's chilling case, which shook Texas in 2018.
Chemirmir, who died at the age of 50, was indicted on 22 capital murder charges. Between 2016 to 2018, he preyed on dozens of elderly women, smothering them with a pillow and stealing their valuables.
Billy Chemirmir was sentenced to life imprisonment
In 2022, Billy Chemirmir was found guilty for the murder of 81-year-old woman Lu Thi Harris and was sentenced to life in prison. Few months later, he faced the trial for the murder of Mary Brooks, 87, where he was found guilty and was again sentenced life imprisonment.
After these two convictions, prosecutors in Dallas County dismissed the remaining 11 charges on him and didn't seek the death penalty for Chemirmir.
Even when he faced additional charges in suburban Collin county, the prosecutors said that they would not seek execution, arguing that he would spend his entire life behind bars.
NBC DFW quoted Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said, "Billy Chemirmir is an evil person who preyed upon our most vulnerable citizens. Although he is certainly deserving of a death sentence, my decision today is informed by the fact that he has already been tried three times in another county and he will never be a free man again."
"Chemirmir has already been found guilty of capital murder by two separate Dallas County juries and is now serving two prison sentences of life without parole. My decision was made in consultation with the families of the Collin County victims and in light of the recommendation of the senior prosecutors in my office," he further added.
How did Billy Chemirmir die?
Billy Chemirmir died at the age of 50 in his prison cell. As per Fox News, his cellmate, Wyatt Busby, stabbed him with a "knife/edged instrument" after Chemirmir made vulgar comments about Busby's children.
It is reported that Busby dragged Chemirmir out of his cell and killed him while other inmates witnessed the entire incident.
Billy Chemirmir's horrifying case will be analysed within three-lengthy episodes in Paramount+'s 'Pillowcase Murders', scheduled to release on May 14.
