'Peaky Blinders': With Thomas leading the Communists, will we see Freddie Thorne again?

Iddo Goldberg's character, Freddie Thorne, might have been declared dead at the beginning of season two, but there might be a chance he will return to resume his role as the undaunting Communist. Starring alongside Cillian Murphy as Thomas Shelby, Helen McCrory as Polly Grey, Paul Anderson as Arthur Shelby, and Finn Cole as Michael Grey, Freddie was not just an alliance for the Shelbys, but also their immediate link to the cringing world of politics.

Freddie had been Thomas' best friend ever since they were children and as a sergeant in the Great War, he had saved Thomas' life when he was severely wounded in the trenches. However, over the course of time, their political differences had set them apart.

While Freddie went on to become a vociferous communist leader, Thomas retained his place as the mafia leader of the notorious Shelby clan. The two continued to share a strange relationship of envy and atonement, which was quietly indicative of the fact that Thomas clearly did not approve of Freddie's affair with his sister, Ada.

In spite of knowing well that he might be killed by all three Shelby brothers who did not want their sister to be seen by a wanted vigilante, Freddie continued his affair with Ada while calling out protests for the Communist party against the factory owners in Small Heath, Birmingham.

Their forbidden relationship found its base in the movement, and that was probably one of the main reasons why Thomas rejected the idea of giving away his sister to a man who stood against everything he represented. However, over the course of the first season, their relationship was gradually accepted by the Shelby family when Freddie refused to flee Birmingham claiming he did not fear Thomas.

The two had a boy named Karl, two years after which we witness the Shelby family attending Freddie's funeral where it is revealed that he had apparently died from 'The Flu', likely the Spanish Influenza pandemic of 1918-1920, shortly after season two begins.

The death was extremely vague, we do not see Freddie's body and to add to that, Ada refuses to return to her family and continues to hold on to the surname Thorne which she acquired after her wedding. On the other hand, Thomas, who was always against Freddie's idea of Communism went on to become the leader of the Communists, leading the party in the Parliament.

Does that mean that Freddie might return in the fifth season? Considering the fact that we never actually saw him die, it can be assumed that Freddie might still be alive.

There are chances that he might have gone into hiding due to the impending threat of the government hunting down Communists at that time. He may probably return at a safer time when his brother-in-law is ruling the party that he once led. Freddie's return might also be a dubious one as we are assuming he might have some ties with the Glasgow mafia, and might just seek vendetta from Thomas for taking his throne away during his absence.

'Peaky Blinders' returns with season five this year in Spring and we hope that Freddie will return with the other characters we suspect might make a comeback.
