The 92nd Academy Awards is currently taking place at the Dolby Theatre, California. Winners under the majority of the categories have already been announced, sparking a range of a conversation among the audiences once again.

The nominations for Best Actress in a Supporting Role included Kathy Bates for 'Richard Jewell', Scarlette Johansson for 'Jojo Rabbit', Margot Robbie for 'Bombshell', Florence Pugh for 'Little Women' and Laura Dern for 'Marriage Story'.

While the speculations were leaning towards Johansson and Pugh, the award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role was taken home by Dern for presenting the audience with a steely divorce attorney in 'Marriage Story'.  It was Dern’s first-ever Academy Award, although she was nominated twice before for ‘Rambling Rose’ and ‘Wild’.

However, her shining moment from Oscar's night soon paved way for debate on social media as fans have varied opinions to share about her big win.  Dern’s fans feel that the actress deserved an Oscar which was long due. “Ahhhh I'm so happy for Laura Dern! She deserves all the good things, I'm such a big fan,” wrote an excited fan.

A few noted on Twitter that there were movies besides 'Marriage Story' that served up better supporting female roles. For instance, one said, “Really thought everything about this movie was average - including Laura Dern. I must have missed something. #MarriageStory #Oscar2020”

Dern’s win also garnered an equal amount of criticism from those who felt her role in 'Marriage Story' was minimal.

“LAURA DERN WON FOR THE STUPIDEST FUCKING MOVIE WHEN SCARLETT WAS OUT THERE BEING JOJOS MOTHER,” lamented a fan. Another added, “She did nothing but serve during hustlers?!?! laura dern had like one little monologue in marriage story also hustlers was a much better movie”

Nevertheless, the actress on receiving her award used the platform to thank her parents for all their support and love, which has led her where she is.

"Some say, never meet your heroes. But, I say, if you are really blessed you get them as your parents,” Dern stated in her acceptance speech.
