Orange Is The New Black: 6 reasons to be excited for the move away from Litchfield Penitentiary
The former occupants of Litchfield have now been transferred to a different prison altogether, which means that a lot of people have been separated.
The last five seasons of 'Orange Is The New Black' have been quite eventful, what with all the multiple murders, a riot, along with some prisoners actually escaping the hell-hole that was Litchfield. However, taking into account the recently released trailer for season 6, the former occupants of Litchfield have now been transferred to a different prison altogether, which means that a lot of people have been separated.
But the new trailer also shows a lot of the inmates still sticking together in a new maximum-security prison in the new trailer, so that is something to go by, to say the least.
The new season will probably be one of the darkest yet in the history of the popular Netflix series since the ladies are not only fighting for survival, but also trying to avoid facing the full force of the law. Therefore, here's what one can look forward to once the full season releases on July 27, 2018. And since the long-awaited season is just around the corner, it is time, once again, for people to get reacquainted with the ladies of Litchfield Penitentiary.
1. A new prison
After spending five long seasons in the same prison, the inmates of Litchfield Penitentiary are now being moved to a maximum security prison after having stayed so long in a minimum security one, therefore, the transition of the inmates poses quite an interesting angle for the show's viewers.
One of the show's USPs is that it aims to give the audience an inside look into a women's prison, so it is also going to be interesting to see how life changes for the inmates once they are moved to a different location where new adjustments have to be made in order for their own survival.
Not only is the new prison a welcome change of scenery, but it will also showcase how the inmates adjust to their new surroundings while life still goes on beyond the gates of their new abode. It will also impact some serious dynamics for them, like where they sleep, to meal times, to recreation, all of which will in turn help in determining the dynamic between them leading to interesting consequences.
2. Some new and unlikely alliances
Over the course of the last five seasons of the popular Netflix drama, the show has completely turned the meaning of friendship upside down, and if Big Boo and Pensatucky's relationship since the fourth season is something to go by, anything is possible in season 6, that's for sure.
According to what can be guessed from the season 6 trailer, one of the most interesting things that are going to happen in the new prison is the introduction of colored uniforms and different groups based on these colors. Although Litchfield was heavily broken down in terms of racial profiling, with things like alliances and friendships based on the same lines, the fight for survival in this new system will most probably end up straining these past affinities and lead to the start of some new, and somewhat unlikely, connections and bonds.
The season 6 trailer has already teased some of the most bizarre alliances that seem to have been formed in the new prison already, including Taystee and Flaca, and Pennsatucky and Crazy Eyes. But the ongoing investigation for the prison riots will be a real test for these inmates and their relationships, and it will be extremely exciting to see how the inmates band together to survive.
3. The return of some familiar faces
Although with only a trailer at our disposal, it is difficult to judge how many former characters will make an appearance once again on the show. However, we are certain about at least one person making their return on the new season, which is none other than the loony inmate Lolly Whitehead.
And Lolly's return on the show is going to be pretty monumental for the rest of the cast since she is one of the people who have complete knowledge of Aydin’s death at the hands of Alex Vause in season 4. With Lolly (and hopefully) Alex coming face-to-face in the sixth season, sparks are set to fly, and it will be an interesting thing to see how their encounter will end up changing the entire future of the series, especially since Alex got engaged to her prison lover Piper at the end of the previous season.
But the show's executives have kept Alex's presence a huge secret in the season six trailer, and fans have been speculating ever since whether she will return to the show or will be completely written off from the drama that is to unfold in the new episodes.
4. The introduction of new inmates
As much as the return of the former inmates to a new prison system is pretty exciting, to say the least, with a change in scenery there are bound to be some unfamiliar and interesting inmates who will be introduced through the course of the show, in turn also determining the life and further course of action for a lot of former Litchfield group in the process. And a new prison also means changed guards for the prisoners, which is another interesting angle that the new season is bound to bring to the table.
The host of new inmates in a new maximum security prison is sure to bring along with it its own set of drama and conflicts, something which the popular Netflix drama survives on. Moreover, it will be extremely interesting to see how the former Litchfield inmates hold their own and stick to their previous lifestyle while also finding their place within the existing cliques of the new prison.
According to what has been revealed so far in the trailer, one new character who is definitely joining the rest of the recurring cast is Rebecca Knox’s character, Tina Swope, who has been described as a "tough little thing" by Knox herself. And from the looks of it, this new person is sure to ruffle some feathers amongst the old Litchfield residents, giving the audience a taste of some unseen drama that is about to come.
5. Possible resolutions for the rioting inmates
The fifth installment of OITNB left quite a lot of loose ends in its wake, some of which will possibly get tied up in the sixth season. And of course, there will be at least some sort of resolution for all the cliffhangers from the fifth season, out of which the most awaited ones are Piper's recent engagement with Alex towards the end of the previous season, as well as the fate of administrator-turned-prisoner Linda Ferguson.
Moreover, season 6 might also give its viewers answers to some of the show's more long-running mysteries, as a result of the investigation into the shooting, and eventual death, of CO Humphries. And with former inmate Daya still in the picture, it is going to be interesting to see whether there could be a return of the father of her child, CO John Bennet. It will also be exciting to find out what Maureen Kukudio's crime was since she was monumental in the demise of CO Humphries for she was the one who had tampered with his IV tube in the first place.
And even though there is no way to absolutely determine if there will be any answers to the more long-running questions, it is for sure expected that a resolution of at least some loose-ends is at hand to satisfy die-hard fans.
6. Lasting consequences for former actions
The former inmates of Litchfield Penitentiary will most likely be facing some potential charges in the murder of a guard and the 3-day-long riot, which shows that it has been made pretty clear that the stakes will be all the higher in season 6. It is no more a threat from the SHU which is keeping the prisoners up at night since it is very clear that anyone found guilty as a result of the investigation would be facing life imprisonment.
The trailer makes it quite clear that the inmates under immense pressure. The authorities will be wanting to push the former inmates to crack and reveal the culprits of the riot, so it is safe to assume that tensions will be high throughout. And what is further interesting about the investigation is who is, in the end, found guilty and will face consequences, but also the fate of the person responsible for sending one of their own to that end, which in turn will leave them to face their own punishment from fellow inmates.
Season 5 did give an indication of what inmates like Gloria and Ruiz are ready to do for their families on the outside, so it will be exciting to see what the consequences in season 6 are going to be and how the prisoners could get pushed further as they try to keep their hopes up for an eventual release from the prison life.
