The undeniably hilarious and entertaining sitcom is unfortunately among those television shows that are bearing the brunt of the coronavirus pandemic. With their future in jeopardy, the show only stands a chance at renewal if the rerun generates a substantial viewership at the channel that like Pop TV is also owned by ViacomCBS. 'One Day at a Time' dwells into the dynamics of the Alvarez family and their ups and downs in a heartwarming sitcom that has had a loyal audience. Before the show airs on CBS for its rerun, meet the cast.
Justina Machado as Penelope Alvarez
Machado plays the role of the newly-single war veteran protagonist who is raising her two children with the help of her mother. The actress is also a producer on the show and has directed one episode in the season. Machado was most recently seen in Netflix's 'Sorta Like a Rockstar'. She is also known for her work in 'Jane the Virgin', 'Six Feet Under' and 'Queen of the South'. Apart from that, Machado is also known for her performances in 'The Purge: Anarchy', 'The Accidental Husband' opposite Uma Thurman, Bernard Tevenier's 'In the Electric Mist' opposite Tommy Lee Jones, and the independent film 'Pedro' which debuted at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival.
Rita Moreno as Lydia Riera
If there is someone on the cast of 'One Day at a Time' that doesn't require an introduction, it is EGOT winner (an Oscar, a Tony, two Emmys and a Grammy) Rita Moreno. The Broadway and Hollywood legend plays the role of the matriarch of the Alvarez family - Penelope's mother and the god-fearing grandmother to her two children Elena and Alex.
Moreno is known for her supporting roles in the musical films 'Singin' in the Rain', 'The King and I' and 'West Side Story'. She is also known for 'Carnal Knowledge', 'The Four Seasons' and 'Slums of Beverly Hills'. She lent her voice to the titular role of Carmen Sandiego in 'Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego?'. Moreno was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W Bush and the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama.
Isabella Gomez as Elena
Gomez plays the role of Elena, the activist and feminist teenage daughter of Penelope. Her character arc on the show is very interesting and is applauded for the depiction of LGBTQ representation. The actress is also known for her minor but unforgettable roles in 'Modern Family' and 'Matador'. She played the role of Isla in 'A Cinderella Story: Christmas Wish'.
Marcel Ruiz as Alex
As Alex, Ruiz plays the role of Penelope's son, a role for which the actor won the Imagen Award for Best Young Actor in 2017, and consecutive nominations till 2019. The recognition is given by an organisation that is dedicated to "encouraging and recognising the positive portrayals of Latinos in the entertainment industry". Apart from his work on 'One Day at a Time', Ruiz is known for playing John Smith in the 2019 movie 'Breakthrough'. The same year, he was named as one of the '10 Latinxs to Watch in 2019'.
Todd Grinnell as Schneider
Grinnell plays the role of the rich landlord - also Penelope's best friend and a close ally of the family. The actor is known for his work on 'Grace and Frankie', 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia', 'The Young Pope', 'How I Met Your Mother', 'Revenge' and 'Desperate Housewives'.
Stephen Tobolowsky as Dr Berkowitz
