Spike Lee and HBO team up to bring inspiring stories from the New York City that was the epicenter of two of the worst tragedies in the last 20 years
Spike Lee is teaming up with HBO to come out with a documentary that would focus on New York City over the past two decades starting with the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers and then becoming the epicenter of the Covid-19 pandemic. The World Trade Center attack that took place on September 11, 2009, was one of the worst terrorist attacks in the history of humankind. Often referred to as “9/11,” the attacks were a series of four coordinated attacks by the terrorist group Al-Qaeda that jolted the United States of America.
The attacks caused the deaths of 2,996 people (including all 19 hijackers) and injured more than 6,000 others. Meanwhile, the Coronavirus pandemic is also one of the worst disasters of the 21st century and has taken more than a million lives globally. However, the US has been the worst-affected nation when it comes to infections and casualties.
The upcoming documentary, titled ‘NYC Epicenters 9/11→ 2021½’, will talk about the lives of New Yorkers as they rebuild and get up from two of the worst tragedies in the last 20 years. The multi-part project will also feature first-hand accounts from many citizens.
The involvement of Spike Lee in the project surely makes this one of the highly-anticipated projects of 2021. Lee’s epic storytelling mixed with impeccable visualizations will be a treat to watch.
There is no official release date announced for the project, however, it has been confirmed that the upcoming documentary will be airing later this year to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
The documentary will shed a light on the lives of New Yorkers who try to rebuild their lives from a devastating terrorist attack through the ongoing global pandemic. The official synopsis reads: “The multi-part documentary event will offer an unprecedented, sweeping portrait of New Yorkers as they rebuild and rebound, from a devastating terrorist attack through the ongoing global pandemic. Capturing the history through a staggering amount of visual imagery, and featuring first-hand accounts from a panoply of citizens from all walks of life, the documentary event will debut later this year on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max in commemoration of the September 11th attacks.”
HBO and the makers have not revealed the cast of the upcoming documentary. The movie will feature first-hand stories of hundreds of citizens living in New York City.
The documentary is being helmed and produced by the Academy Award-winning filmmaker Spike Lee. Speaking about the project, Lee said that the documentary will feature 200 interviews which will make the world understand why NYC is one of the best cities in the world.
Lee said: “With over 200 interviews, we dig deep into what makes NYC the greatest city on this God's earth and also the diverse citizens who make it so. Over centuries, pundits and straight haters have proclaimed NYC was dead and stinkin', only to be proved wrong. You will lose ya money betting against New York, New York. And that's the truth, Ruth. Be safe. Peace and love.”
Meanwhile, the docu will be edited by Barry Alexander Brown and Adam Gough.
There is no official trailer available for the project. We will update the story whenever a trailer is released.
