'New Amsterdam' Season 2 Episode 3: Max and Helen's story is off to a very slow start, and it's tearing fans apart

Despite trying to ignore her in the first episode, and pushing her away in the second, Max is clearly concerned about her

Since the very first time Max (Ryan Eggold) and Helen (Freema Agyeman) appeared together on 'New Amsterdam' fans realized that they are going to be a thing - it may take a season or two, but that is where these two are headed. And, after Georgia's (Lisa O'Hare) death, this trajectory seems inevitable.

Helen was among the seriously injured in the crash that killed Georgia, and this makes it all the more difficult for Max to interact with her like he used to, but it doesn't mean that he doesn't care about her or respect her like he used to. In the upcoming episode, in fact, we see Max getting more vulnerable than he has been in a while when he realizes that she is risking her career.

In Season 2 Episode 3 of the NBC show, we see that the patients at New Amsterdam are being poisoned, and it seems like a commonly used medical product is what is causing the reaction. While the representatives of the company claim that they are in full compliance with FDA guidelines, Helen threatens to go to the media with proof against them.

From the trailer for 'Replacement', it is clear that Max does not think this is a good idea. Even though he never backs down from a fight, and even went against pharmaceutical companies that sell insulin at exorbitant rates, he fears for Helen's professional future. He is seen telling her, "They will destroy you," adding tearfully that he cannot "do this without you."

Despite trying to ignore her in the first episode, and pushing her away in the second, he is clearly concerned about her and loves her. While it may still be a while before anything romantic happens between these two, the foundation for a solid relationship is being built in these initial episodes. These scenes, however, are seemingly tearing the fans apart, with one commenting, "Max and Helen will destroy me. I hope they get back to being the best friends we love and support," and another opining, "Aww, I hope they can get back to being good friends. Poor Max."

We are definitely on the same boat, and can't wait to see how their story pans out, starting with the upcoming Season 2 Episode 3 of 'New Amsterdam' which airs on October 8, Tuesday.
