New Amsterdam Season 2 Episode 3: Can Helen help Max through his depression, like she did for his cancer?
Max (Ryan Eggold) was among the very few cancer patients in the world to be okayed for a new-age treatment that actually worked for him. He is lucky. Max is a new father to a beautiful baby girl named Lola. He is lucky.
However, he lost his wife Georgia (Lisa O'Hare) just hours after she gave birth to their child. He has to run the prestigious New Amsterdam hospital and continue to work as the medical director, handling everyone's problems, while also being a single father to his daughter. In the past few episodes, it has become evident that Max's way of dealing with all the pain without faltering on his responsibilities is to work harder and longer.
His friends are worried about him, though, especially Helen (Freema Agyeman), who wants to ensure that he is okay. She wants to be there for him, but he doesn't want to let her in, even makes it clear to her that people make it worse when they ask him if everything is okay. He is happy giving it all to the hospital and his daughter while marinating in the memory of his late wife.
He is bound to crash at some point, and we sure hope that Helen is there to guide him when it happens. Even though Max refused to take his cancer seriously, Helen was the one who got him to actually buck up and take care of himself so that he could take care of the others. She also found him an alternate treatment when she realized chemotherapy wasn't working for him.
From the way their story is going, we also know that Max and Helen are going to start dating at some point. When the show returns with Season 2 Episode 3 on Tuesday, October 8, we are sure to get a glimpse of how their relationship evolves post Georgia's death.
Ultimately, it comes down to the fact that Max has Helen - who would do everything in her power to help him through his depression. He is lucky.
