Plot
The series is a documentation of the life of a modern-day first-generation Indian American teenage girl, a highschool Sophmore, named Devi. She has an overachieving attitude and had recently lost her father. The series is inspired by Kaling's own childhood. Kaling herself dished a few details about the plot and how the series came to be.
"Netflix approached me about doing a series on young Mindy, I wasn't as interested in telling a period piece about an Indian girl growing up in the '80s, but I told them I'd love to do a show about a 15-year-old Indian girl now," Kaling said in an interview with Variety.

Poorna Jagannathan
Jagannathan is an Indian-American actress and producer and has appeared in high-profile TV shows like 'Big Little Lies' and 'Better Call Saul.' She is known for her role as Safar Khan in HBO's Emmy-nominated show, 'The Night Of.' She will be playing the role of Nalini, Devi's mother in 'Never Have I Ever.'
Other cast members include Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Benjamin Norris, Richa Moorjani, Adam Shapiro, and Ramona Young. She show will be narrated by tennis legend John McEnroe.

In the teaser released, we see lead the character Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) pray to the Gods for her first day of school. From wanting to be invited to parties and having a boyfriend, she echoes the sentiments of many teenagers as they embark on their teenage years. Not to mention, if you've watched 'The Mindy Project,' you might get a tad bit of deja vu!
