If MTV VMA Awards season arrives, can glitz and glamour be far behind? The first VMA awards with a live audience since the Covid pandemic, artists left no stone unturned in looking drop-dead gorgeous as they showed up one by one on the red carpet. Hailed as one of the biggest nights of the music industry, it would not be an exaggeration to assert that the MTV VMAs indeed go on to inspire the couture fashion scene on multiple levels.

Known for the most outrageous and quirky red carpet fashion, the MTV VMAs have always set the style game high among celebs. The trend (and the trains) were carried forward this year by Saweetie, Lil Nas X, Olivia Rodrigo, Latto, Simone Biles, Megan Fox, and others with their red carpet hits. However, there were a few misses as well, as some of the A-listers failed to impress fashion gurus and netizens. Here is a list of the worst red carpet looks from MTV VMAs 2021.

Normani

The 'Wild Side' singer appeared in a Patrycja Pagas outfit that paired a gorgeous jacket with a skirt (?) that will make you scratch your head. The look remained incomplete and messy solely because of the tricky white mini skirt with a long hanging sash.

Fashion experts might differ with us on this one but the public was not quite a fan of Kim Petras' royal Dominatrix look. The German singer-songwriter showed up in an embellished artsy dress with royal symbols all over, and paired it with black latex stockings and a latex face mask. Despite the bizarre appeal of the dress, we ought to acknowledge that the Richard Quinn outfit perfectly paid homage to drag icon Leigh Bowery, who actually inspired the design.

Avril Lavigne

Avril Lavigne tried to channel her inner Cher (from 'Clueless') with this pink plaid suit, but it is the weirdly cut-out jacket that failed to make the cut. However, it did remind us of the pale pink plaid shirt she donned for MTV Latin America in 2007. It's been fifteen years already, can you believe?

While we can still appreciate Halle Bailey's simple white gown with a complicated neckline, the same cannot be said about sister Chloe Bailey's crinkly silver gown. Resembling a gigantic aluminum foil fashioned into a dress, the gown looked bizarre and confusing, even by MMA standards. Sorry, Chloe!

We cannot make ourselves like this dress, no matter how hard we try. Neither the bust ruffles nor the slit is working on what could otherwise have been a simple, elegant black evening gown.

Dixie D'Amelio

(L-R) Dixie D'Amelio and Charli D'Amelio attend the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards at Barclays Center on September 12, 2021 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City.

The TikTok sister duo could not fully bypass a fashion disaster as their outfits failed to stand out on the VMA red carpet. While Charlie's dress have a fashion barbie doll vibe that we can get used to, Dixie's overall look remained restrained and awkward in that pencil skirt meets criss cross halter top.

Troye Sivan

Definitely not the worst one in the list, Troye Sivan's crop jacket might have looked better with longer pants, fashion experts believe.

MTV Video Music Awards 2021 was held on September 12, 2021, at Barclays Center, New York City in front of a live audience. The 40th edition of the awards ceremony began at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT and was aired live on CTV.
