LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: It’s that time of the year once again when all the big celebrities get ready to thank their fans for being so supportive and take home the MTV Movie and TV awards. The winner has been announced for this year’s Best Performance in a Movie Award and after an immensely successful year with ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, Tom Cruise picked up another win for the movie by earning the aforementioned accolade at this year’s ceremony.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ was one of the highest-grossing movies last year and earned several accolades during the awards season. Also, it didn’t come as a surprise that the actor decided to deliver his acceptance speech while flying through the air in a jet. In his acceptance speech, Cruise thanked all the fans for this award and didn’t leave any stone unturned to let them know how he loves entertaining his fans. The actor went on to encourage viewers to watch his next movie on the biggest screen possible and concluded his speech with his signature line: “We’ll see you at the movies.”

Cruise thanked fans and said he loves 'entertaining' them

“Hi everyone, thank you so much for this award. I make these films for you, I love you. I love entertaining you. I know how much you enjoy it. How much you appreciate it. There's just no better feeling. I hope you enjoy ‘Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One’. It'll be coming out in July. It is a wild ride. You have a wonderful summer. Thank you again for letting me entertain you. It's an absolute privilege. We'll see you at the movies!” Cruise said.

Cruise faced a lot of stiff competition from talented actors such as Austin Butler (‘Elvis’), Florence Pugh (‘Don’t Worry Darling’), Keke Palmer (‘Nope’), and Michael B. Jordan (‘Creed III’).

However, he failed to entertain Austin Butler fans

If you are a Tom Cruise fan, you would have enjoyed the win. But if you are an Austin Butler fan and were rooting for his win, then you might be a little annoyed. Social media went berserk after Cruise won the trophy and a large section of users didn’t shy away from saying “Austin was Robbed.”

One of the fans wrote, “Austin got robbed.” Another social media user tweeted, “Austin should have won.” Another social media user wrote, “Austin Butler is robbed again of another reward, seriously does everyone not like Elvis or all the hard work he went through? Sure tom cruise is a good nominee for top gun and michael b. Jordan for creed 3 but Austin deserves redemption from the Oscar he deserves a reward!” Another social media user tweeted, “He won over Austin? LMFAOOOO.”

“Can’t believe Tom Cruise and his movie won over Elvis, austin butler deserved the MTV award that was one of the best movies of last year,” wrote another user. “This is a f****ng joke!! Justice for #AustinButler,” tweeted another user.

Butler won a flurry of accolades for playing legendary musician Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Elvis’ and was one of the strongest contenders to win the Academy Award. However, he missed out on a chance to have the golden statuette in his hands as Brendan Fraser took the Best Actor accolade for his superlative performance in ‘The Whale’. So, a lot of fans believed that winning the Best Performance award at the MTV Movie & TV Awards would have given them a lot of pleasure.

As far as the event is concerned, it faced a lot of roadblocks this year due to the ongoing strike by the Writers Guild of America. It was reported that a lot of attendees were pulling out of the event and it was getting really hard for the organizers to have a LIVE broadcast. On the other hand, the WGA labor union announced that it will hold a demonstration at the event amid the dispute. That’s why MTV pivoted away from a live ceremony.
