'Medici' Season 3: Release date, plot, cast, trailer and all you need to know about the Italian drama's final installment
The Medici family of Florence, Italy had a major impact on not just medieval Europe, but also on the way the world banks today. No other family has had such an influence on Italy's and Europe's history.
The Medici family's influence resulted in the building of the largest bank in Europe in the 15th century, four Popes of the Catholic Church, among other important figures also came from this family. They financed the invention of the piano and opera and funded the construction of Italy's best-known architectural marvels such as Saint Peter's Basilica and Santa Maria del Fiore.
The family was also patrons of history's most eminent artists, including Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Machiavelli, and Sandro Botticelli. They were protagonists of the counter-reformation, from the beginning of the reformation through the Council of Trent and the French wars of religion. As such, the Medici family's saga rivals even 'Game of Thrones' in terms of violence and political intrigue. The first season featured Richard Madden as Cosimo de' Medici and Dustin Hoffman as Cosimo's father, Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici.
Season 2 fast-forwarded to tell the story of Lorenzo de' Medici, also called Lorenzo the Magnificent. The role was played by Daniel Sharman. The upcoming season will also focus on Lorenzo and complete his story.
Release date
The third and final season of 'Medici' will be released on Netflix on May 1.
Plot
The third season begins immediately after the events of Season 2 in the aftermath of the Pazzi conspiracy. To recall, the Pazzi family members were rivals with the Medici family, despite Lorenzo's old friendship with Francesco de' Pazzi and Lorenzo's sister, Bianca marrying Guglielmo Pazzi.
The Pazzi conspiracy led to the death of Giuliano de' Medici, Lorenzo's brother. Lorenzo retaliated and the ordeal ended when Francesco and his uncle, Jacopo, the instigator of the conspiracy were hanged.
In Season 3, Lorenzo must face a military coalition from the Pontifical States and the Kingdom of Naples, led by the ambitious Girolamo Riario. This retribution comes since the Catholic Church and the Pope were the Pazzis' customers and supporters. Lorenzo then undertakes a diplomatic journey to Naples to negotiate peace between the Vatican and Florence.
