'Lovecraft Country' Episode 8 Preview: What does Diana Freeman aka Dede know about magic?
Diana Freeman's (Jada Harris) arc has been quite the tumultuous one on HBO's 'Lovecraft Country'. As George's (Courtney B Vance) daughter, it's understandable where her vivid imagination comes from and with a mother as brainy as Hippolyta (Aunjanue Ellis), Diana is sharp as a knife as well. Tragedy struck their family at the onset of the show when George died on an adventure, and a couple of episodes later, she joined her mother on Tic (Jonathan Majors) and company's latest expedition. With Hippolyta going on an absolute bender to learn the truth behind her husband's death and recently discovering the magic rooted behind all of their worries, Diana aka Dede shouldn't be far behind either. And if the teaser trailer is to be trusted for the upcoming Episode 8, Dede learns more than just about magic.
The trailer kicks off with Dede looking through the glass window of what looks like a toy shop. Some girls are playing with a skipping-rope along the street when White police officers come to a halt in their police car right behind Dede and confront her for no reason. This is the same officer who had asked Leti (Jurnee Smollett) about the supernatural elements in the new mansion she had bought and this is the same man who had confronted Christina Braithwaite (Abbey Lee) about visiting his town without notice. It's obvious he knows more about Hiram Epstein's mansion than anybody, which means he also knows about the Orrery that Hippolyta took on her adventure.
It is possible these cops are looking for the magical object that is now evidently missing, perhaps it was reported stolen by Christina since it was the only thing that had brought her to town. So off they go questioning Dede because her mother has been AWOL for a while too. Let's not forget, Hippolyta had accidentally killed a White cop in the observatory after a scuffle between them and Tic. So poor Dede could just be facing the consequences of her mother's actions as the teaser continues to show her manhandled by the much older cops who persistently mock and ask her with sinister smiles plastered on their faces, if she knows anything about magic.
The teaser also hints at supernatural horrors like life-size play dolls coming to life and accompanying Dede, leading us to believe she finds out more than just the time-traveling abilities of the Orrery. Maybe she will communicate with spirits or get possessed, who even knows what could happen on the series.
'Lovecraft Country' airs on Sundays at 9 pm only on HBO.
