'Lovecraft Country' Episode 7 Preview: Did Hippolyta time travel? Here's how that could be possible

'Lovecraft Country' has long hinted at an anthology pattern of sorts, where each episode is an independent adventure into the lives of its characters. This time, it's Hippolyta

In gross unfairness within the first two episodes, everybody's beloved (uncle) George Freeman (Courtney B Vance) was killed. Before George had died on the last adventure of his life, he had promised his wife Hippolyta (Aunjanue Ellis) that someday they would go on an adventure together, filling out pages of his very own Safe Negro Travel Guide.

However, that never happened and when Tic (Jonathan Major), Leti (Jurnee Smollett) and Montrose (Michael K Williams) returned without him, Hippolyta had to take matters in her own hands to find out what exactly had happened to her husband, George. Thus began her journey of seeking the truth behind the magic that seems to have cursed her life, and with her daughter, Dede, in tow it looks like Hippolyta might have finally figured out the answers that none other than Christina Braithwaite (Abbey Lee) is seeking.

'Lovecraft Country' has long hinted at an anthology pattern of sorts, where each episode can be considered an independent adventure into the lives of its main characters, and now it is time for the secondary characters to shine. After watching Ruby (Wunmi Mosaku) shed her White woman persona and catching a glimpse into Tic's past with the kumiho Ji-Ah (Jamie Chung), it's time for Hippolyta to take center stage and she just might have pulled a fast one of the rest of them, as teases the trailer of the upcoming Episode 7: 'I Am'.

The trailer sees Hippolyta in at least three, significantly different timelines — first as an ancient empire warrior, then as part of the 1920s flapper women and finally in a more Space-drama type adventure where she's banging the walls of a shuttle to let her out. In all the different timelines, she maintains she is Hippolyta, leading us to deduce she might have time traveled, and this was definitely not a past life. But how does Hippolyta of all people figure out how to perform the coveted feat?

The answer lies in the orrery left behind by George. The mechanical model of a solar system is supposed to possess forces of magic unlike any other, and by the looks of what Hippolyta manages to achieve in the upcoming episode, it is most definitely the same fantastic all-powerful "Hiram's Orrery" that the Braithwaite heiress seeks. This same orrery was revealed to be the key to completing Hiram's time machine and Hippolyta seems to have cracked the code before either Tic or Leti could.

The trailer also sees a visibly anxious Leti warning Tic that his aunt might be on to something, especially in terms of how they lied about the specifics of George's death, so if drama is what you're seeking, Episode 7 definitely packs it all. 'Lovecraft Country' airs on Sundays at 9 pm on HBO.
