Liu Yifei to play Mulan in upcoming live-action adaptation of 1998 Disney classic
Liu Yifei, 30, has acted in a number of high-profile shows and movies including the 2008 Jackie Chan starrer 'The Forbidden Kingdom'
Disney has unveiled the first look of star Liu Yifei as the Chinese warrior princess Mulan for its upcoming live-action movie. The live-action adaptation of the 1998 'Mulan' will see Liu disguise herself as a man in order to spare her father from having to join the military at an old age. The film will shoot on locations in New Zealand and China and will open in US theaters on March 27, 2020.
According to Disney's description of the film, "Mulan is the epic adventure of a fearless young woman who masquerades as a man in order to fight Northern Invaders attacking China. The eldest daughter of an honored warrior, Hua Mulan is spirited, determined and quick on her feet. When the Emperor issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army, she steps in to take the place of her ailing father as Hua Jun, becoming one of China’s greatest warriors ever."
'The Forbidden Kingdom' actress won the role last November after a year-long global casting search.
As one of the most beloved actresses in China, Liu was named one of the New Four Dan Actresses in 2009, which honors the country’s most popular and bankable stars. The 30-year-old actress has acted in a number of high-profile shows and movies including the 2008 Jackie Chan starring 'The Forbidden Kingdom'.
She was also seen in the 2014 movie 'Outcast', alongside Nicolas Cage and Hayden Christensen. One of her most recent films, 'Once Upon a Time' which was released in 2017, reportedly grossed up to $82.3 million in China. The actress is also known to have been serving as a brand ambassador for Dior, Tissot, Garnier, and Pantene.
Liu will be joined by several well-known actors for the live-action movie, including Donnie Yen ('Star Wars: Rogue One'), Jason Scott Lee ('Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny'), Yoson An ('The Meg'), Utkarsh Ambudkar ('Pitch Perfect'), Ron Yuan ('Marco Polo'), Tzi Ma ('Arrival'), Rosalind Chao ('Star Trek: Deep Space Nine'), Cheng Pei-Pei ('Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'), Nelson Lee, Chum Ehelepola, with Gong Li ('Memoirs of a Geisha', 'Raise the Red Lantern') and Jet Li ('Shaolin Temple', 'Lethal Weapon 4').
The movie is being directed by Niki Caro ('Whale Rider', 'McFarland USA') from a screenplay by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver ('Jurassic World', 'In the Heart of the Sea') and Elizabeth Martin & Lauren Hynek based on the narrative poem 'The Ballad of Mulan.' The producers are Jason T. Reed ('Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles'), Chris Bender ('A History of Violence') and Jake Weiner ('Criminal') with Barrie M. Osborne ('The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King'), Bill Kong ('Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon', 'Monster Hunt') and Tim Coddington ('Crazy Rich Asians') serving as executive producers.
