‘Love & Hip-Hop: Hollywood’: Apple Watts compares her behavior to Cardi B and indavertently sparks fiery racial debate
LHHH cast member Apple Watts is infamous for her Instagram live stories, unfortunately for her, that ended up becoming a roadblock to her dream of having her own shoe line. Rapper YoYo who has recently joined the LHHH ensemble took Apple under her wings. The former stripper expressed her desire of having her own shoe line, so Yo-Yo arranged for a meeting between them and her close friend Big Mike, who does branding for many celebrities.
Big Mike asks Apple about herself and then tells the reality star that he did a bit of background check on her and whips out his phone and shows her one of her Instagram live videos, where she’s her usual animated self. Big Mike then tells Apple that she needs to clean up her act if she wants him to help her. He then goes on to add that he approached a few companies he works with and they all declined to work with her owing to her image. After quietly listening to everything, Apple calmly asks him what was wrong with her behavior, she tells him that’s who she is and she doesn’t see anything wrong with it. In her green room interview, Apple compares herself to Cardi B and says that Cardi does a similar thing on her social media and she’s encouraged for it while Apple is asked to “clean up”. She then asks the viewers to explain the difference.
This opened a can of worms about race on social media. Several fans spelled out to Apple that the difference between her and Cardi is that the famous rapper isn’t a “black girl”. A fan tweeted, “The difference is Cardi B isn’t black that’s why they take her and not Apple... #LHHH”. Another fan wrote, “apple is right Cardi b does it and everybody loves it but girl for black women we got to work harder plus you have to be at least a littl professional girl #LHHH”. “Apple is blocking her blessings with this mentality but then again I felt it when sis said when cardi B does it its funny so why can't she I thought about that and that is a double standard it's f***** up but we can't do what they can do are we are considered angry/ghetto #lhhh”, echoed another fan.
A fan pointed out, “So my only prob is that when @applewatts talks crazy on IG, it's a prob....but Cardi B was doing it....she's "REAL". Apple is literally in the same situation that Cardi was in but she's being torn down instead of built up....colorism at it's best in the industry #LHHH”. “Apple had a good point, people praised Cardi B behavior, but they want the black girl to clean up her attitude. #lhhh”, expressed a fan.
