Netflix's 'Layla Majnun': Release date, plot, cast, trailer and all you need to know about Indonesian romance drama

The Indonesian romantic drama 'Layla Majnun' has already created a buzz among viewers across the world, and fans of the romance genre cannot wait for the love story to unravel on their screens. Directed by famous Indonesian filmmaker Monty Tiwa and starring two of the top Indonesian stars in the lead, the movie is all set to release on February 11.

The trailer of the movie already looks promising and has been shared several times by fans. Romcom fans cannot wait to grab some popcorn and gear up for the story of a romance identical to the legendary lore of love between Layla and Majnun. It has been categorized as an understated film on Netflix.

Plot

The film looks at the eternal story of love between Layla and Majnun through a modern-day lens. Here, the protagonists are Layla, an Indonesian scholar, and Samir aka Qais or Majnun. The film revolves around their lives and their profound love for one another. 

Layla gets a job offer to be a guest lecturer, far away from home in Azerbaijan and she is elated to accept it. Meanwhile, Ibnu Salam comes to her family with a marriage proposal, whom she promises of commitment out of a sense of duty.

As Layla lands in Azerbaijan, she meets Samir, a handsome man who happens to be her student as well as a great admirer of her work. The two fall in love and start spending time with each other. 

Things start going wrong when Ibnu makes a sudden visit to Layla in Azerbaijan and her arranged marriage stands in the way of following her heart. 

Cast

Acha Septriasa



 

Acha Septriasa stars as the titular female lead Layla in the film. A well-known actress in the Indonesian film domain, Septriasa started her career in entertainment as a model with the teen magazine Gadis. 

Her film debut happened in 2005 with 'Apa Artinya Cinta' as a supporting actress. In 2006, she shot to fame with her role in 'Heart', where she also sang for the soundtrack album that got international airplay. She has sung in several movies after that and also released her first solo album 'Keputusan Hati' (Heart's Decision) in 2009. 

Reza Rahadian



 

A prominent star in Indonesia, Rahadian plays the role of Samir in 'Layla Majnun' opposite Septriasa. His rise to fame stemmed from his iconic role in 'Perempuan Berkalung Sorban'. In 2004, he made his film debut while also working as a model to earn coverage in the entertainment industry and launch his career as an actor. 

Rahadian acted in multiple films after that in various genres - ranging from horror to romance to biopics. His portrayal of the former president B.J. Habibie in 'Habibie & Ainun' earned him a lot of acclaim. He also directed a short film 'Sebelah'.

Baim Wong



 

Actor Baim Wong stars as Ibnu Salam in the movie. He is well-known for his roles in 'Moammar Emka's Jakarta Undercover', 'Jejak Cinta' and 'Pasukan Garuda: I Leave My Heart in Lebanon'. 

Creators

The movie is directed by Monty Tiwa, the maker of the hit series 'My Lecturer My Husband', also starring Reza Rahadian. The story of 'Layla Majnun' is written by Alim Sudio.
