2020, as we all know, has been tough on everybody but there were some who despite the global pandemic came forward to make this world a better place and Global Citizen Prize Awards 2020 are going to celebrate their valued contributions. The coveted award ceremony will honor those who inspired us, made extraordinary efforts and extended their support when the world was its most vulnerable state.  Here’s everything you need to know about the ceremony celebrating true leaders.

 What is it about?

Global Citizen Prize Awards 2020 will feature inspirational stories and unforgettable performances while also honoring the leaders who tried their best to make the world a better living place. The award ceremony will bring together influencers, artists, activists and global leaders. According to Entertainment Weekly, Hugh Evans, co-founder and CEO of Global Citizen said, “We are honored to celebrate this year's ‘Global Citizen Prize’ winners who have made it their life’s mission to be the change we want to see in the world. Our hope is that through this award, their leadership will inspire people all around the world to make an impact in their own communities, at a time when the world needs it most!”

When is it happening?

Global Citizen Prize Awards 2020 will broadcast on Saturday, December 19 at 8 pm ET/ 7.30 pm PT on NBC. And those, who won’t be able to watch it, worry not as the awards special will replay on MSNBC on Sunday, December 20 at 10 pm ET and again on New Year's Day at 12 am ET.

R&B sensation John Legend will be returning to host the Global Citizen Prize Awards 2020 for the second time. He is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, actor, film producer, theatre director and philanthropist.  Legend won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and Golden Globe Award in 2015 for co-writing the song "Glory" from the film Selma. He also has 11 Grammy Awards to his name. In 2017, Legend received a Tony Award for co-producing Jitney for the Broadway stage. In 2018, Legend portrayed Jesus Christ in NBC's adaptation of the rock opera 'Jesus Christ Superstar'. He received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his acting role, and won for his role as a producer of the show. Since 2019, Legend has been a coach on 'The Voice'.

According to the official website, artists such as Alessia Cara, Carrie Underwood, rapper Common, Gwen Stefani, JoJo and Tori Kelly will take over the stage to perform their respective hit singles. Legend, who is hosting the award ceremony, will also be performing.

Sir Elton John will receive the Global Citizen Artist of the Year Prize whereas, Warren Buffett will be honored with the Global Citizen Prize for Philanthropy. Sesame Workshop will be awarded the Global Citizen Prize for Culture and Education while The Black Lives Matter Movement co-founders Alicia Garza, Opal Tometi, and Patrisse Cullors will receive the Global Citizen Prize for Activism. Bryan Stevenson of Equal Justice Initiative will be honored with the Global Citizen of the Year Prize and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, will receive the Global Citizen World Leader Prize. The Global Citizen Business Leader Prize will go to LifeBank Founder Temie Giwa-Tubosun.

A-listers like Oprah Winfrey, Nick Jonas, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Miley Cyrus, Usher, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Katie Couric, Scott Evans and John Oliver will be presenting the awards to the deserving winners. 

How to live stream?

Viewers can catch the Global Citizen Prize Awards 2020 broadcast on NBC. The award ceremony will also be available for viewing in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America. The Global Citizen Prize ceremony will also be streamed digitally via Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook on December 20, at 11:30 pm ET.
