‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ trailer brings back ‘Star Wars’ favorites and reveals a surprise cameo
A new trailer for ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ dropped Tuesday, February 17. Pedro Pascal returns as Din Djarin, the stoic bounty hunter who somehow became the galaxy’s most devoted single dad. And Grogu? Still adorable and capable of flipping a room upside down with just a blink. The trailer runs fast and loose, tossing out flashes of danger, oddball humor, and blink-and-you-miss-it surprises. One of the biggest curveballs comes early, when Din seeks answers from an alien figure whose voice sounds suspiciously familiar. Turns out, it's Martin Scorsese.
The legendary filmmaker’s voice makes a cameo in the footage, a fact confirmed to USA Today by Lucasfilm. This came as a shock to fans, as his involvement hadn’t been whispered about before this. Then comes the moment that might send longtime fans into a mild spiral. Din Djarin without the helmet. Anyone who’s watched ‘The Mandalorian’ knows the helmet stays on. Mostly. There have been exceptions, sure, but they were few and far between. The trailer teases a scene where he’s dragged before what appears to be a villain, and his helmet is removed. He’s also seen bareheaded during a confrontation with a monstrous creature.
While the trailer keeps its central storyline close to the vest, it does hint at familiar criminal faces stirring up trouble. The Hutts appear to be circling, and they are not exactly known for warm welcomes. At one point, threats are aimed at Grogu. Fans of animation get a couple of treats too. Zeb Orrelios, a favorite from ‘Star Wars Rebels,’ pops up in live-action form and bonds with Grogu, declaring, “I like this kid!”
Another animated character stepping into the flesh-and-blood world is Embo, the bounty hunter previously seen in ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars.’ His appearance is brief in the trailer. Meanwhile, new faces are joining the intergalactic mix. Sigourney Weaver enters the story as a New Republic pilot. In the footage, she speaks with steely resolve about stopping another war before it ignites. Also stepping in is Jeremy Allen White, who lends his voice to Rotta the Hutt, yes, the son of Jabba. The character was previously seen in the 2008 animated film ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars.’ This movie marks the first time in nearly seven years that a new ‘Star Wars’ film will hit theaters.
The last big-screen outing was 2019’s ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,’ which closed out the sequel trilogy and pulled in over a billion dollars worldwide. Since then, plenty of theatrical projects have been announced, shuffled around, or quietly disappeared into hyperspace. Through it all, ‘Star Wars’ kept its presence alive on Disney+, beginning with ‘The Mandalorian’ back in 2019 and branching into multiple live-action series. But a theatrical release? ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ is the first one in years to actually make it to the big screen. The film arrives in theaters on May 22.
