'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' could breathe new life into The Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise
"Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise? We thought not. It’s not a story the Jedi would tell you. "It's a Sith legend."
That's how we were introduced to the legend of Darth Plagueis in 'Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith' when Sheev Palpatine / Darth Sidious (Ian McDiarmid) recounted the tale of the Sith Lord to Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen).
"Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midi-chlorians to create life… He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying."
"The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did."
"Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself."
The story of Darth Plagueis is one of the most popular pieces of 'Star Wars' lore, quoted on forums, tattooed on bodies and even turned into copypasta, which is where we've taken the above quotes from.
Though the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis was one of the most beloved scenes in 'Star Wars', particularly praised for its operatic feel, the story hasn't really played much of a role in the rest of the Skywalker Saga beyond helping push Anakin to the dark side and his future as Darth Vader.
However, that could change when 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' arrives in theaters worldwide. As the final movie of 'Star Wars' as we know it, the movie is expected to tie up all loose ends and create a nice package out of the Skywalker Saga as a whole.
It would be a shame if the movie was to ignore this part of the franchise's lore, especially considering how popular it is. Besides that, there's actually a way the story could figure into the movie, especially with regard to Emperor Palpatine, who we've been led to believe will be coming back from the dead.
Quite obviously, Darth Plagueis' ability of midi-chlorian manipulation might aid in the Emperor's resurrection. This becomes even more likely when you remember that Plagueis' apprentice, the one who learned all that he could from Plagueis and then killed him without a second thought, was none other than Palpatine himself.
'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' will hit theaters on December 20.
