Steven Spielberg's 'Disclosure Day' teaser teases proof of alien life, and humanity may not be ready for it
Steven Spielberg is officially stepping back into the realm of cosmic mystery. Universal Pictures has dropped the first teaser for 'Disclosure Day'. It's a tightly guarded new feature that marks the legendary filmmaker's return to science fiction, and specifically, to the UFO world he helped define for modern cinema. The newly released teaser arrives as Spielberg's first film since 2022's drama 'The Fabelmans'. At 78, the Oscar-winning director is revisiting themes that have fascinated him for decades, from humanity's place in the universe to the idea that the truth about extraterrestrial life may be closer than we think.
Spielberg's relationship with UFO storytelling stretches back nearly five decades. His 1977 classic 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' reshaped how Hollywood portrayed alien contact. He later expanded that legacy with 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial' in 1982 and revisited a darker perspective on invasion with 2005's 'War of the Worlds'. Plot details remain deliberately scarce. The film was shot primarily in and around New Jersey and has been kept under unusually strict wraps. Marketing for the project has been similarly cryptic.
In recent weeks, billboards appeared in major cities like New York and Los Angeles featuring only the film's title and the ominous tagline: "All will be disclosed." Rather than dropping online first, the teaser is being rolled out theatrically, playing ahead of screenings of James Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ash', which opens this week. The footage itself is more suggestive than revelatory. There are no clear shots of aliens or spacecraft, but the tone is unmistakable: urgent, secretive, and tinged with existential dread. In one particular moment, Josh O'Connor's character argues that "People have a right to know the truth, it belongs to 7 billion people."
Meanwhile, Elizabeth Marvel's character poses a haunting question: "Why would [God] make such a vast universe, but save it only for us?" The ensemble cast is stacked with prestige talent. According to The Guardian, Emily Blunt stars alongside O'Connor, with Colman Domingo, Colin Firth, Wyatt Russell, and Eve Hewson rounding out the lineup. Behind the camera, Spielberg reunites with longtime collaborator David Koepp, who penned the screenplay. Koepp previously worked with the director on 'Jurassic Park' and 'War of the Worlds'.
When asked whether 'Disclosure Day' exists in the same fictional universe as 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind', Koepp playfully dodged the question in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He refused to confirm or deny any narrative overlap. In his words, "Like I'm going to answer that. Sorry, Woodward! You're trying to trick me into confirming something that I don't want to confirm." Moreover, 'Disclosure Day' is scheduled for a wide theatrical release on June 12, 2026, positioning it as one of the most anticipated films of the year.
