ABC’s crime drama ‘High Potential’ has wrapped its second season, and let’s just say, it did not exactly go out peacefully. For the second year in a row, the show left viewers hanging at the worst possible moment. This time, though, one of the main characters left fighting for his life in the final minutes. The closing episode of Season 2 builds toward a tense confrontation, but the final stretch takes a turn. Morgan Gilloery (Kaitlin Olson) finds Captain Nick Wagner (Steve Howey) in critical condition after a violent encounter that goes terribly wrong. He was knifed and left wounded, bleeding out in a park. The situation traces back to Wagner’s connection with his father, a politician with a questionable track record. That link becomes the center of suspicion when Gillory and Lieutenant Selena Soto (Judy Reyes) start digging deeper.

During their confrontation, Wagner insists he’s on Gillory’s side. In fact, he proves it in a risky way. He intentionally gives her incorrect timing for a meeting he’s scheduled with an FBI contact tied to the case involving her missing ex. That small lie ends up being the difference between life and death. Gillory arrives late, only to find Wagner already shot and bleeding, while she herself avoids being caught in the crossfire. The episode ends there. As if the cliffhanger was not enough, Deadline reported that Howey will not continue as a full-time cast member moving forward. His role as Captain Wagner was always a short-term commitment, with a one-season agreement in place from the beginning. Still, his departure, coming right after such a suspenseful moment, raises eyebrows.

It leaves fans wondering whether Wagner survives at all or if this was the character’s final chapter. That said, the door has not been completely shut. There’s talk that Howey could return briefly next season, possibly to wrap up his storyline. However, that decision has not been locked in yet. Wagner’s journey this season was not exactly smooth. When he first appeared, his look alone sparked chatter, thanks to a mustache that became a talking point among viewers. The reaction was strong enough that the show dropped it after a few episodes. However, beyond appearances, the character struggled to make a consistent impression early on. He was absent for stretches and, when present, often came across as suspicious. At one point, it even felt like the story was setting him up as a possible antagonist.

Things started to change near the end of the season. His backstory came into focus, and his connection with Gillory began to feel more personal. The two even shared a kiss, hinting at a bond that could have been explored further. That makes the final episode hit harder. Moreover, the finale also ties up the arc of Lucia (Susan Kelechi Watson). Introduced as Detective Adam Karadec’s former fiancée, she had a limited presence throughout most of the season. However, the final episode places her at the center of a murder case. The twist? She becomes a suspect. Karadec (Daniel Sunjata) is forced to handle her arrest himself, creating a tense situation. Meanwhile, ‘High Potential’ has already been picked up for Season 3, though an exact premiere date is still under wraps.
