Is ‘Smiling Friends’ canceled? Fans in frenzy after season 3 finale ends on an ‘awkward’ note

Fans of ‘Smiling Friends’ went into Sunday night expecting a typical dose of bizarre humor, chaotic plot, and off-kilter charm. What they got instead was a finale so strange, so mythology-shaking, and so unexpectedly introspective about one green little creature that it unleashed an online meltdown, complete with rumors that Adult Swim had quietly axed the show after three seasons. Episode 8, titled ‘The Glep Eph’, put the spotlight on Glep, the lounging, growling, bean-bag-dwelling mystery who’s been one of the series’ running enigmas since the very beginning. The finale revealed long-teased threads about who Glep really is and what he does.

The episode opens with an oddly mundane, existential question: “What does Glep actually do at Smiling Friends Inc.?” After watching him spit, groan, and exist in his unmistakably Glep-like fashion, Mr. Boss comes to the startling organizational conclusion: Glep contributes absolutely nothing. And so, in a decision that shocked viewers, Glep gets fired. That moment was already dramatic enough, but things escalated when Glep’s wife left him, sending him spiraling into a bar where it was casually revealed that this green little enigma has been alive for centuries. Centuries!

Suddenly, the joke character became a cosmic oddity, and fans began wondering whether the writers were subtly tying up loose ends. This is where the panic set in. After the finale aired, Reddit and X lit up with speculation that ‘Smiling Friends’ wasn’t just wrapping up a season, it was quietly wrapping up the entire series. Some fans pointed out that the season three finale carried an oddly “awkward” tone. Others noted that Adult Swim finales are often built to double as series finales, just in case the network doesn’t renew. On top of that, Glep’s long-running mystery being questioned and neatly resolved made the episode feel like deliberate closure.

But despite the online doomsday predictions, ‘Smiling Friends’ is not only alive, it’s thriving. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Adult Swim has ordered two more seasons: Seasons 4 and 5. That means the absurdist comedy from creators Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel will continue well beyond the finale that briefly fooled the fandom. Production is already underway at Williams Street, as confirmed earlier at the Annecy Animation Festival, where the co-creators joined Adult Swim VP of development Cameron Tang on stage. But there is one catch!

Even though 'Smiling Friends' is renewed through Season 5, the creators have made one thing clear: the show will not run indefinitely. Cusack put it bluntly: “It won’t go and go and go. We want it to be like a nice little box set.” Both Cusack and Hadel admitted they often debate how long the series should last. Some mornings, they think three seasons is perfect. Other days, they’re tempted by the idea of a longer run. They already have potential stopping points in mind, meaning Season 5 could be the beginning of the end. Still, with two more seasons locked in, fans can rest easy knowing ‘Smiling Friends’ isn’t disappearing anytime soon.
