Is ‘His & Hers’ based on a true story? Netflix's hit mystery thriller sparks one major question

Set against the backdrop of a small town, Netflix’s 'His & Hers' made its debut on Thursday. Developed by William Oldroyd, the series is already garnering principal critical appreciation and follows Anna (Tessa Thompson) and her estranged husband, Detective Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal). Their seemingly quiet lives are thrown into turmoil when a murder rocks the town, causing both to become suspicious of each other. While the narrative of the six-episode series is gripping, many viewers are left wondering whether it is based on a true story.

Reportedly, 'His & Hers' is adapted from Alice Feeney's 2020 novel and is not based on a true story. Feeney structured the novel with dual perspectives from Anna’s and Jack’s points of view to deepen the story’s contrasting narratives, to explore the contrasting experiences of grief in a small-town setting. While the adaptation changes locations from a fictional British town of Blackdown to Dahlonega and Atlanta, the central thriller elements of secrets, lies, and murder remain faithful to the book, as per High on Films.

Notably, Oldroyd was drawn to the novel's surprising twists, seeing it as a "love letter" to maternal bonds amid suspense. Thompson reportedly shaped Anna using insights from survivors' stories, portraying ambition as both an escape and a form of isolation. At the same time, Bernthal studied Dahlonega's local law enforcement to bring authenticity to Jack, creating on-screen tension that mirrors the estranged couple's relationship.

To add more, 'His & Hers' debuted with a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score (at the time of writing), earning praise for its twisty storytelling and strong performances by Thompson and Bernthal. The series is also garnering appreciation for its ability to consistently subvert expectations while keeping viewers hooked throughout, as per ScreenRant. Talking about the cast of the show, Bernthal plays Jack, a small-town detective in Dahlonega whose strained marriage to Anna and a personal murder case complicate his efforts to do the right thing.

Thompson stars as Anna, a driven former news anchor who returns to her hometown to cover a murder after isolating herself following a personal tragedy. Her return brings her fierce ambition and truth-seeking nature back into collision with a past she tried to leave behind. Sunita Mani plays Priya, an eager, quirky new detective whose enthusiasm and fascination with crime both complement and irritate her more seasoned partner, Jack, as per Tudum.

Crystal Fox plays Alice, Anna's strong-willed but ailing mother who lives alone in Dahlonega, growing increasingly erratic after a family tragedy while maintaining a connection with her son-in-law Jack despite being estranged from her daughter. Pablo Schreiber plays Richard, a top WSK TV News cameraman and the husband of Anna's rival Lexy Jones. Anna selects Schreiber as her cameraperson when she returns to Dahlonega to cover a murder. Rebecca Rittenhouse stars as Lexy, the ambitious WSK TV News anchor who took over Anna's coveted desk during her absence and has no intention of giving it up, despite putting on a polite front when Anna returns.
