Discussing the details of the pair’s exit from the royal family, Harry admitted that a wedge was created between him and his brother and that William took the institution’s side. When Harry and Meghan privately discussed giving up their titles, the news apparently was leaked by “royal insiders” to the media, which caused the couple to put out an official statement on social media. While the couple made headlines for having blindsided Harry’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, Meghan left for Canada during the ongoing chaos. Soon after her departure, the royal family held a meeting which included Harry to discuss the couple’s future plans.
Harry claimed to have been given “five options" - from being all in to being all out. While Harry chose option three, which was half in and half out, where the couple would support the Queen of England while still living independently, his choice was rejected. Harry then made a shocking claim that Willaim screamed and shouted at him while the rest of his family only watched.
“It was terrifying to have my brother scream and shout at me and my father say things that just simply were not true,” he said, "And my grandmother, you know, quietly sit there and sort of take it all in.” Harry also claimed that people were telling the late Queen that Harry and Meghan’s proposal to leave would be seen as an “attack” on the institution. The Duke of Sussex added that the meeting had no solidified action plan.
Harry also touched upon the viral story that stated William had "bullied" the couple out of the family. According to Harry, he was told about a joint statement released in his and his brother’s names squashing the story. Harry expressed his rage at not being asked for his approval before putting out the statement. He revealed he discussed the matter with his wife, who broke into tears because it proved their point that within four hours of his brother’s name being tainted, the royal family was happy to “protect William.” Still, for three years, no one was willing to tell the truth, to protect Meghan and Harry. This incident caused the Duke to take a stand and decide to move out.
The couple’s move was dubbed “Megxit” by the British tabloids as they dissected every piece of information leaked about the couple. “The truths didn’t matter; the clickbait did,” claimed the duchess. In another tense scene, Meghan confronted Harry while accusing his brother of being aware of the leaked text messages between her and her former communications person regarding a personal letter she wrote to her father, Thomas Markle, which was at the center of a Daily Mail lawsuit.
Netflix dropped the second installment of the highly anticipated documentary 'Harry & Meghan' on Thursday, December 15.
