Is Kali secretly evil? Eleven’s sister’s return in ‘Stranger Things 5’ leads to dark fan theories
Love her or loathe her, Kali has returned to ‘Stranger Things’ in a way that’s impossible to ignore. Eleven’s long-lost sister reappeared in Season 5, Volume 1, but it’s in Volume 2 that Kali truly steps into the spotlight, according to Cosmopolitan. When viewers reconnect with Kali in Season 5, she’s no longer the rogue survivor who escaped Hawkins Lab years ago. Instead, she’s been imprisoned inside a twisted Upside Down version of the facility, where the government has been exploiting her abilities in horrifying ways. According to the show, Kali has been repeatedly drained of her blood, which is being used to engineer a new generation of children with supernatural powers.
The experience has clearly broken something in her, leaving her bitter, exhausted, and convinced that no one connected to Hawkins Lab, least of all Eleven, will ever be allowed a happy ending. By the time Volume 2 reaches its conclusion, Kali’s worldview has grown even darker. She persuades Eleven that the only way to permanently end the cycle of abuse is through total sacrifice. In Kali’s mind, destroying the Upside Down and Dimension X isn’t enough. She believes that she and Eleven must also die in the process to prevent scientists from ever weaponizing their powers again.
Disturbingly, the final moments of Volume 2 strongly suggest that Eleven is beginning to accept this idea. While Kali’s logic may stem from genuine trauma, many fans aren’t buying her sincerity. Online speculation has exploded since Volume 2 dropped, with Reddit threads filled with theories suggesting that Kali is hiding something far more sinister. One fan wrote, “I’m concerned that Kali will cross EL last minute or Kill her and try to save herself.” Another viewer shared a similar reaction, saying, “I do not trust her at all. I’m halfway through [chapter] 7 and I don’t like her one bit.” Fueling that suspicion is the fact that Hopper himself doesn’t trust Kali.
His doubts echo what many viewers are feeling: that Kali’s return may not be about closure or redemption, but about pushing Eleven toward a dangerous choice. The Duffer brothers have remained intentionally vague about Kali’s true intentions, but they’ve acknowledged that her presence is meant to unsettle audiences. Matt Duffer teased her impact in an interview with SFX magazine, saying, “Kali shifts things a lot for Eleven, and I think it'll be surprising for people to see how she ultimately fits into the story. We're excited about that, because it immediately changes the tone. And obviously, the way things ended with Hopper leaves a lot of tension between them.”
That comment alone has convinced many fans that a major twist is still waiting to unfold. Season 5, Volume 1 premiered on Netflix with four episodes on November 26, timed around the Thanksgiving holiday. Volume 2 followed with three new episodes released on Christmas Day, December 25. In keeping with the show’s holiday-themed rollout, the final episode of ‘Stranger Things’ will arrive at 8 p.m. ET on New Year’s Eve, Wednesday, December 31.
