Netflix’s ‘Bridgerton’ is inching closer to its much-anticipated fourth season. And while the series is known for sweeping romances and bold reinventions, its latest change might be one of its quietest and smartest yet. Season 4 will center on Benedict Bridgerton, played by Luke Thompson, and his long-awaited love story with Sophie, portrayed by Yerin Ha. Inspired by Julia Quinn’s 2001 novel ‘An Offer From a Gentleman,’ the new season promises a familiar Cinderella-style romance, but with a noticeably modern edge. Though the basic framework remains intact, Netflix’s adaptation signals a shift in how Sophie’s character is portrayed.

Set during the Regency period under Queen Charlotte’s watchful eye (Golda Rosheuvel), ‘Bridgerton’ Season 4 draws heavily from the classic fairytale structure that defined Sophie Beckett’s story in the novels. Renamed Sophie Baek for the series, the character exists on the fringes of high society, mistreated by her stepmother Araminta (Katie Leung) and stepsisters Rosamund (Michelle Mao) and Posy (Isabella Wei), according to ScreenRant. The most revealing change arrives in the Season 4 trailer, where Sophie is shown actively plotting her own transformation for the iconic masquerade ball.

Rather than being swept along by circumstance, Sophie is depicted venting to fellow staff members about her cruel family before deliberately planning her disguise and secret attendance. This moment marks a notable departure from the novel. In ‘An Offer From a Gentleman,’ Sophie was hesitant and uncertain, relying heavily on others to push her toward the ball. Her makeover and attendance felt more like something that happened to her than a choice she made for herself. In the original book, Sophie Beckett often functioned as a reactive figure. Key events unfolded around her, with little sense that she was steering her own fate.

Bridgerton’ Season 4 appears determined to avoid that pitfall. Sophie can still be reserved and cautious, especially when managing life under an oppressive stepmother. However, the show seems poised to make her more layered and self-aware. In a contemporary romance, the idea of a purely passive heroine feels outdated, and Netflix seems keenly aware of that. Benedict has been a fan favorite since the show’s debut in 2020, and his love story has long been one of the most awaited arcs in the series. The adaptation has already taken bold creative steps with his character, including establishing him as canonically bisexual in Season 3.

Giving Sophie more independence and resolve not only modernizes her character but also creates a more balanced partnership. There is still time for Season 4 to miss the mark, but early signs suggest the show is moving in the right direction. By subtly shifting Sophie from a passive dreamer to an active participant in her own destiny, ‘Bridgerton’ may have found a way to honor its source material while updating it for a 2026 audience. As reported by Parade, ‘Bridgerton’ Season 4 will debut in two parts on Netflix, with Part 1 arriving on January 29, 2026, followed by Part 2 on February 26.
