Internet slams Emmys 2024 as host Anthony Anderson brings in mom instead of playoff music interrupting winners' acceptance speech

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Fans were upset when Anthony Anderson's mother interrupted Jennifer Coolidge's acceptance speech, despite his warning at the start of the ceremony. Many took to social media to call out the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards for not letting the winners have their moment.

Host Anthony stated that instead of playoff music today, his mother would shout at award recipients if their acceptance speeches went too long, and she rose up from her seat in the crowd to illustrate the interruption.

"See what I mean?" Anthony said. "My mama don't play."

Before presenting the 75th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards in January 2024, Anthony told PEOPLE that his mother would join him on stage.

"I can't host the Emmys without having Mama Doris on the stage with me, so we're finding some smart ways to incorporate her into the show," he was quoted as saying.

The 'Law & Order' star went on to say that Doris would replace the music used to cut people off during speeches by shoving them off the stage herself.

"As opposed to having playoff music for when people run over on their speech, my mother appears on stage just tapping her wrist and her watch like, 'Speed this s--- up, speed it up, because I want to be out of here by 11,' " he added.

On X, fans wrote, "oh this woman telling everyone to shut up in their speeches getting REAL old REAL fast." While another user chimed in, "I hate how they have Anthony’s mom as the “time card.”"

One person further wrote, "Omg I thought the mom thing was a joke?? That’s not a good bit." A fourth person tweeted, "Ok they need to stop rushing actors off!"

One user asked, "Why can't they give actors more time for acceptance speeches??" "I would rather this time to go to speeches as opposed to these skits," wrote another. 

One person also tweeted, "Perhaps it’s just me- I want to hear the speeches. They can cut so much filler from the show and give time for honest and real moments to happen. Let the story tellers TELL THEIR STORIES!" Others added, "Emmy acceptance speeches are now reduced to chyrons. Wow." 

Who is Anthony Anderson's mother?

Doris Bowman, Anthony's mother, is more than simply a parent; she is also his collaborator. Doris gave birth to the 'black-ish' actor on August 15, 1970, in Compton, California.

Doris worked as a telephone operator, while Anthony's dad, Sterling Bowman, managed a chain of three clothing businesses. She was also an ambitious actress who changed her emphasis to parenting her son once Anthony was born, a decision the mother-son pair discussed in a June 2023 interview with Entertainment Tonight.

Doris received her big break after appearing with her son on several TV series, most notably presenting FOX's 'We Are Family' game show. She said on the 'Rachael Ray Show' in October 2021 that she had wanted to be an actress since she was 17, but after her son was born, she chose to give up on her goal.

Doris is the mother of two sons: Anthony and Derrick Bowman, an ICU nurse.

Anthony Anderson traveled across Europe for a TV show with his mom

Doris and Anthony have collaborated on a number of series, including 'To Tell the Truth', 'House Haunters', and episodes of 'Black-ish'. However, she and Anthony pushed things to the next level when they embarked on a six-week adventure around Europe, which was captured in the film 'Trippin' with Anthony Anderson and Mama Doris'.

The show, which began on E! in June 2023, followed Anthony and Doris as they went around England, France, and Italy, enjoying activities such as walking the runway during African Fashion Week and learning to dine etiquette.

Anthony and his mother were announced to take over FOX's 'We Are Family' in November 2023, after the original family pair of Jamie Foxx and his daughter Corinne were unable to complete the job owing to schedule difficulties.

The series, which started in January 2024, is a game show taped in front of a live audience of players who must utilize a sequence of clues to predict which celebrity a performance is connected to before the answer is revealed.

"I jumped at the opportunity to host We Are Family and can't wait for you to see all the celebrities, their relatives, and the many surprises we have in store this season—and with my mama by my side, you never know what's going to happen!" Anthony stated, per Deadline.
