How are participants selected for the US Swimming Olympic Trials?
The selection process for USA Swimming is rather easy. If a swimmer finishes in the top two of a race and has an Olympic qualifying time, they will be selected (pending federation approval).
Swimmers for freestyle relays are also picked based on their timing during trials. The maximum size of the US Olympic swim squad is 26 women and 26 men, including relay swimmers.

Since making her Olympic debut at the age of 15 in London in 2012, 27-year-old American swimmer Katie has built an impressive resume of gold medals, world titles, and historic records, cementing her status as one of the sport's finest athletes.
With an illustrious career behind her, she is virtually guaranteed to secure a spot on the USA Swimming squad for her fourth consecutive Olympic Games. However, like other American swimmers, she must solidify her spot by performing exceptionally well at the 2024 US Olympic Swimming Trials.
Katie, the most decorated female swimmer of all time, is slated to participate in four events at the trials, including the women's 800m and 1500m freestyle, where she aims to defend her world records and gold medals from Tokyo.
She will participate in all the trials, including the 200- and 400-meter freestyle events, to complete her schedule. Katie holds a previous world record in the 400m freestyle and has earned Olympic gold medals in the 200m and 400m events.
