‘How To Get Away With Murder’ Season 6 Episode 12: Annalise Keating exposes the ugly side of the justice system
With only a few episodes left, ABC’s hottest legal thriller just keeps on getting darker and digs deeper into all possible aspects of law and order. Case in point — Episode 12. It was an expose of a sort on how disturbing the legal system has become.
It comes out when Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) is charged with capital punishment and Tegan Price (Amirah Vann), her friend and lawyer, contests the sentence. Considering that the charge involved government officials, this becomes a federal case and requires them to plead to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for dropping the charges.
This is the time Annalise tells Tegan to “let the dragon out”. Although a ‘Game of Thrones’ reference is in play here, it is also a way that Annalise deals with the toughest situation. When all her schemes and strategies to thwart off a challenge fail, she resorts to the media, making herself heard. And that is what she did with her death penalty charge as well.
Annalise calls for a press conference and lets it all out. She practically dishes out the instances when the government has stood against her even when she was trying to do the right thing, revealing how flawed the justice system is.
She lays down the example of her class action suit, where hundreds of defendants were held guilty of crimes they did not commit and about 1,500 innocent people were sentenced to death. The suit brought Annalise up from her worse days and showed the world how she has been a voice for every victim of the unfair legal system.
She also goes on to expose how the minority population still gets the darker side of law and order and that she is being hated by the system and the people therein for standing up against injustice and unfairness and that is why the government wants to remove her by ordering a death penalty.
When fighting to nullify the charge with the DOJ, Tegan calls the system “malicious” and “capricious” and how the justice system is swaying from its responsibility of protecting people from injustice.
The press meet and the following argument with the DOJ panel not only blew the lid off the FBI’s scheme to take down Annalise but also helped see through the flawed legal system that makes the common man suffer and take fall for, despite being innocent.
Later, when Tegan praises Annalise for standing up against the unjust administration and inspiring her to take a stand and find a purpose, it also becomes clear that no matter what the system tries to prove or her students think, Annalise is not guilty of anything but exposing the truth and protecting those who deserve.
And now, as she opens the can of worms on the FBI and the District Attorney, we wonder how ugly will this end up to be.
‘How To Get Away With Murder’ Season 6 will return with episode 13 on April 30, at 10 pm/9 c, only on ABC.
