LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: It is a new dawn, it is a new day, and it is also a new year but it seems like Netflix wants to follow some old rituals. Netflix has canceled the audacious, multilingual sci-fi show '1899' after a sparse six weeks of it being available to stream. Apparently, Netflix wasn’t on board and decided to pull the plug on the show after one season. Although the streaming giant didn't put out any statements justifying their decisions, 'Dark' creators, Odar and Friese released a joint statement confirming the show’s end on Instagram.

The Emily Beecham starring series has received mostly positive critical reviews, with praise for its casting, directing, cinematography, and acting, though some criticized its pacing as slow. The creators had ideas for two more seasons, but the streamer had some other plans. The timeline of the Netflix series is set in '1899', while the storyline follows a group of European emigrants traveling from Southampton, UK on a steamship named Kerberos to start new lives in New York City, USA.

Netflix shocked everyone when it canceled the series, from 'Dark' creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, who revealed the news on social media.

“With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed,” co-showrunners Bo Odar and Friese announced Monday on Odar’s Instagram account, adding “We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned.”

“We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure,” the statement continues, “We love you. Never forget.”

In its first week of availability, the international production cracked Netflix’s top 10 charts at the #2 slot, behind only 'The Crown' Season 5. Within four days, '1899' garnered about 79.27 million hours of viewership. The series served as a follow-up to Adar and Friese’s previous series 'Dark', least to say which was a landmark international breakout for Netflix that debuted its first episodes in 2017.

However, you can still watch the first season of '1899' on Netflix.
