Hulu cancels 'High Fidelity', irked fans slam it as 'worst f**king streaming platform' and call HBO for rescue
Arriving as a remake of a reigning classic is not an easy feat but 'High Fidelity' has truly been through quite the ride. The Zoe Kravitz starrer, originally developed for Disney+, was a remake of the actual 2000 romcom starring John Cusack and had a lot to live up to. But surprisingly enough, the new age spin on the protagonist's gender managed to sit really well with the masses who had their fair share of doubts about the reboot. So when Hulu canceled the critically acclaimed remake after a stellar debut season, fans were more than just angry.
The original 'High Fidelity' saw Cusack as "Rob, a thirty-year-old record store owner who is trying to understand why he is always unlucky in relationships. He attempts to reconcile his relationship with Laura, who recently dumped him". The remake, produced by ABC Signature Studios and shifted to Hulu in April 2019 after Disney's full acquisition of the streamer, saw Kravitz stepping into Rob's shoes, telling the story from a female point of view as still "Rob", aka Robyn. Not just that, the character was a person of colour and bisexual too - perhaps what's gotten #savehighfidelity trending in such short amount of time.
Funnily enough, Kravitz's mother, Lisa Bonnet, had played the role of the original Rob's heartbreaker, Laura. And as widely as the 2000 hit was recognized and touted for its music, the Kravitz starring remake managed to garner the same acclaim for its soundtrack and in general vibe.
More adult-focused than its parent film, Hulu's 'High Fidelity' was a refreshing take on a narrative that had already been received with open hearts before. So it makes sense why it would have appeased the masses enough to garner an impressive 86% and 82% rating, respectively, among critics and viewers on RottenTomatoes.com. The creators, Veronica West and Sarah Kucserka, also had long term visions for their remake, reportedly, as they had told The Hollywood Reporter, "As we move forward into future seasons, I think Rob (Kravitz) is going to date some strangers that we haven't met before. I think we're going to go on relationship stories and other kinds of stories with Cherise and Simon and the universe will continue to expand."
With such steady ideas, clearly lack of more Robyn stories to tell wasn't the reason behind the cancellation. And that perhaps explains why fans of the show are holding the streaming network Hulu accountable for its fate. "HIGH FIDELITY WAS STUCK ON THE WORST FUCKING STREAMING PLATFORM AND COULDNT FLOURISH LIKE IT WOULDVE ELSEWHERE," screamed a fan on Twitter in all caps, right after the news hit.

Another jumped straight to plotting the downfall of the platform, sharing a clip of what looks like witches clad in black cloaks on broomsticks, flying around fire alongside the caption "manifesting hulu’s downfall because they cancelled high fidelity."

Certain fans are of the faith that HBO would have been an impeccable fit for the remake. "The way high fidelity would’ve flourished on hbo," tweeted a fan along with a gif of a woman breaking down into sobs.

Somewhat agreeing, another added: "If HBO Max is smart, they would save HIGH FIDELITY. The show would pair well with LOVE LIFE and they can market it as romantic binge marathons with Max originals."
