ABC shares big update on 'Will Trent' Season 5 amid renewal wave
Special Agent Will Trent (Ramón Rodríguez) isn't done yet. ABC's latest move was renewing 'Will Trent' for a fifth season, an unsurprising move that surprisingly saw the network take some time to confirm. The show has been one of ABC's top-tier series and was ranked as the most-watched scripted series. Based on Karin Slaughter’s New York Times bestselling 'Will Trent' book series, the show follows Rodriguez's titular character as he uses his unique viewpoint to fight for justice after experiencing his own turmoil during childhood.
Per Deadline, Season 4 of the series is the most-watched and is the first from the network to cross each of the four seasons since 'Scandal.' At the time of writing, the show is dropping new episodes weekly on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET. The cop procedural also stars Erika Christensen as Angela Polaski, APD Homicide Detective, Iantha Richardson as Faith Mitchell, GBI Special Agent, Jake McLaughlin as Michael Ormewood, APD Homicide Detective, Sonja Sohn as Amanda Wagner, GBI Deputy Director, former APD Officer, Bluebell as Betty Maria White Trent, a chihuahua Will adopts in the pilot episode, and Kevin Daniels as Franklin Wilks. Liz Heldens, Daniel Thomsen, Karine Rosenthal, Karin Slaughter, Oly Obst, Jason Ensler, Ellen Marie Blum, and Rodríguez serve as EPs, with Heldens, Thomsen, and Rosenthal also serving as showrunners.
The latest development comes on the back of ABC renewing a string of shows. Long-running medical drama 'Grey's Anatomy' returns for a 23rd season, 'High Potential' comes back for Season 3, 'Abbott Elementary' for Season 6, '9-1-1' for Season 10, '9-1-1: Nashville' for Season 2, and 'The Rookie' was renewed as well. On the waitlist are 'Shifting Gears', 'Scrubs', and 'RJ Decker'. In related news, Rodriguez spoke about how 'Will Trent' was one of the surprises that struck gold upon its release. "This business is so wild," he said.
He continued, "You can’t tell when something’s gonna work and why. You can’t predict it, but it’s proven because we continue to grow our fanbase year after year, both on ABC and Hulu. That’s unheard of today with the state of the industry; it’s a unicorn. I don’t know how this happens, but we work hard to create something special and elevated, especially for a show on linear TV." Season 4, comprising 18 episodes, inches to an end with the 15th episode set to air on Tuesday. The finale is slated for May 5.
