'Will Trent' Season 4 closes the door on a promising romance as the series shifts into darker territory
Fans' anticipation is building for ABC's 'Will Trent', which is set to return with season 4 on Tuesday, January 6. The police procedural drama will feature a major shift in protagonist Will Trent's (Ramón Rodríguez) life. Many fans were hoping to see the romance between Trent and his former lover, Marion Alba (Gina Rodriguez), continue, but since she bid adieu to the show in season 3, viewers are unsure about her future.
Executive producer Liz Heldens addressed Gina's departure from 'Will Trent' and left the door open for her return in season 4, saying, "Marion is not going to resurface before season's end…I think that Gina Rodriguez is wonderful. She pops off the screen. We love her…It was an amazing experience to work with her, and I wouldn't rule out her coming back in season 4 at all." Heldens also explained that the season 3 story, despite being 18 episodes, didn't allow enough time to include every character, as she remarked, "When we got to the end, we were like, 'We don't have enough runway for everybody'," as per Collider.
Notably, Gina's Marion Alba debuted in 'Will Trent' Season 3 as an assistant district attorney and became romantically involved with Will in the episode 'No Faith in Second Chances', marking a major step forward for him after his complicated past with Angie Polaski (Erika Christensen). Their relationship faced a major setback in 'Best of Your Recollection' when Will accidentally shot and killed a 14-year-old, a dark twist that emotionally pushed Marion away, leading to their breakup in the episode titled 'You're The Worst Person in the World'.
Despite this, a dream sequence in 'One of Us Now' shows Will asking Marion to wait for him, leaving room for her potential return and a second chance at their relationship in future seasons. Gina's departure from 'Will Trent' puts an end to a promising but short-lived relationship between Will and Marion. Their dynamic added depth to the series, which often focuses on character development over typical procedural drama. It also highlighted that Will still has personal growth to do before he can fully commit to a relationship.
Talking about the 'Will Trent' Season 4 trailer, Will is seen struggling to control his emotions upon learning that James Ulster (Greg Germann), the man who killed his mother and left him as an infant in a trash can, has escaped from prison. In a tense exchange, Angie tells Will, "You didn't create this guy," to which he responds, "No, but he created me," as per People magazine.
Will is then seen struggling to control his emotions, seemingly hearing Ulster's voice in his head and smashing a rock through the window of one of his old foster homes. Meanwhile, his therapist, Dr. Roach (Margaret Cho), urges him to confront his feelings, telling him to stop repressing his anger. Near the trailer's end, Will is shown driving away with bruised and bloodied knuckles as Ulster taunts him, "So there is a monster in there after all," to which Will ominously replies, "Maybe."
