'Gypsy Rose: Life After Lock Up': Inside Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Ryan Anderson's ill-fated relationship
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Lifetime is gearing up to release the first episode of 'Gypsy Rose: Life After Lock Up' on Monday, June 3, 2024. This highly anticipated series follows the life of Gypsy Rose Blanchard after her release from prison.
This is a follow-up to the 2024 documentary 'The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard,' which delved into the extraordinary story of Gypsy, a young woman who was involved in the conspiracy to murder her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard.
As Gypsy navigates life outside of incarceration, 'Gypsy Rose: Life After Lock Up' delves into the challenges she faces, the relationships she builds, and the new beginnings she embraces.
Why did Gypsy Rose Blanchard go to jail?
Gypsy went to jail in 2016 for her involvement in the murder of her mother, Dee Dee. Gypsy's mother had suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a condition in which a caregiver exaggerates or induces illness in a person under their care to gain sympathy or attention.
Gypsy had been a victim of her mother's abuse and manipulation for years. Gypsy testified that her mother physically abused her and restrained her to a bed, as reported by Courthouse News Service.
When Gypsy was three months old, Dee Dee suspected that her daughter had sleep apnea and started taking her to the hospital. Despite undergoing several tests, doctors found no evidence of any health issues with Gypsy, as reported by People. However, Dee Dee became convinced that her daughter was ill.
Her mother made her believe that she was afflicted with leukemia, muscular dystrophy, and other severe illnesses. Over time, Gypsy began to realize that she was not as ill as her mother had claimed.
Gypsy conspired with her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, to kill Dee Dee to escape her abuse. The murder took place in 2015, and both Gypsy and Godejohn were arrested and charged with the crime.
Gypsy later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. She was paroled after serving eight years, in late December 2023, as reported by ABC News.
Who is Ryan Anderson?
Ryan Anderson is a middle school special education teacher from Saint Charles, Louisiana. Gypsy got married to Ryan in 2022 while she was still serving her sentence at the Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri, as reported by Springfield News-Leader.
Ryan first connected with Gypsy 2020 by writing her a letter, as reported by People. This initial contact marked the beginning of a relationship that eventually led to their marriage.
After communicating for more than one year, they finally met in person in July 2021. After a year, they finally got married in prison. They began living a more conventional life after Gypsy was released from prison on December 28, 2023.
However, just three months after she was released, they announced their divorce. The short span of time between her release and the divorce announcement gained media attention.
Why did Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Ryan Anderson file for divorce?
Sources informed TMZ that Gypsy has been confiding in family and friends about Ryan's behavior. According to her, after her release from prison, Ryan became very argumentative and frequently made her feel inadequate and incapable of doing anything right.
Sources also mentioned that a significant issue in Gypsy and Ryan's relationship was his apparent jealousy over the time she spent with her dad.
According to the sources, Gypsy initiated the breakup following a major fight with her husband, Ryan, over his toxic behavior.
Gypsy reportedly didn't fully realize her husband's hoarding habits until they moved into their apartment together. She was particularly troubled by their fridge, which was often filled with old food items that needed to be discarded. When Gypsy disposed of the expired items, Ryan was unhappy about it, leading to a huge argument between them.
She filed for divorce a week after requesting a restraining order against Ryan. She first publicly broke the news on Facebook in March by writing, "Unfortunately my husband and I are going through a separation and I moved in with my parents’ home down the bayou."
Gypsy's friend revealed to People that the split occurred after a major argument in March because Gypsy felt that her husband was "controlling."
Tattoo artist Nadiya Vizier opened up about the tension in Gypsy and Ryan's marriage. Nadiya shared one instance of the couple’s fight and said, "He got in her face and screamed. Gypsy said that she was afraid he was going to hit her.”
In a recent interview with People, she said, “It’s heartbreaking, because no one gets married to get a divorce. Processing those emotions has been hard.”
However, Ryan stated in a TikTok video that Gypsy’s ex-fiancé, Ken Urker, made a surprising call to her stepmother, Kristy, which led to their split. He said, "Y'all will see what really happened on Lifetime."
