‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 16 Episode 5: Richard Webber might have told Gemma to back off, but his marriage with Catherine is still in trouble

There is trouble brewing in Richard Webber's and Catherine Fox’s paradise. Their relationship has been rather rocky ever since Richard was fired from Grey-Sloane Memorial by an irate Bailey, as he knew about Meredith Grey's insurance fraud.
In fact, Catherine had woefully told Bailey that her support for her had cost her marriage with Richard. In the latest episode of 'Grey's Anatomy', Richard finds an ardent admirer in his old patient, Gemma (Jasmine Guy).
During breakfast, he opens up about the difficult patch of his marriage with Catherine and says that the fire has gone out. Gemma seems to take it in another way, and she tries to get a little too cozy with him, including kissing him out of the blue.
Richard is rather flummoxed and tells her to back off, and says firmly that he loves his wife Catherine. Gemma unceremoniously reminds him of his past, where he found himself in the arms of Catherine, despite being married to Adele.
Apart from this, Richard doesn’t have an entirely clean record when it comes to loyalty because of *cough cough* Ellis Grey.
Richard snaps back and says that she need not bring up his past, and there seems to be some hope for fans. But hope is only for those new to 'Grey's Anatomy'. For those of us who have watched this show for sixteen years, we have an unpleasant hint of what's coming.
At the end of the episode, Richard meets Catherine at home. She tells him that he looks tired and needs to sleep. The conversation ends there and it's clear that Richard expected a little more empathy from her. And then Gemma texts him, apologizing for her behavior with a couple of hearts.
Gemma isn't going anywhere, as she is a recurring character this season. While fans are praising Richard for telling her to back off, those last few hearts and Richard’s guilty expression makes us realize that this arc isn’t ending anytime soon.
Will Richard once again jeopardize his marriage with Catherine rather than working it out? Going by the show's history, this wouldn’t be the first time a character has found solace in the arms of another when going through a rough patch with their beloved.
