'Grey's Anatomy' Season 16 Episode 5: Meredith Grey to go to jail, what does this mean for MerDeLuca?

The latest episode of 'Grey's Anatomy' ended with Meredith's lawyer telling her that she would be going to jail. How will this affect her relationship with Andrew DeLuca?

If you were waiting for Meredith Grey’s triumphant return to Grey-Sloan Memorial, you might have to wait a bit. In Episode 5 of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, Meredith’s lawyer tells her that she would be going to jail as she missed out on her court appointment.

To be fair, Meredith had an iron-clad reason, as her daughter Zola had to have a shunt revision and go through surgery. However, the law doesn’t understand emotion. But apparently, in the lawyer’s words, this jail sentence is the ‘smallest drop of humanity’ she could squeeze from them.

The past few episodes have been excessively tough for Meredith, who just can’t seem to catch a break. The star surgeon had committed insurance fraud, all for a good cause, and was fired from the hospital by a furious Miranda Bailey.

She had to spend time doing community service. Her chances of returning to the hospital became dim, when her article on healthcare got a misleading headline, pointing fingers at the culture at Grey-Sloan memorial, landing her further in trouble with Bailey.

And now jail. It’s not like Meredith isn’t exactly a novice when it comes to illegal activity. Remember how she stole Zola in the earlier seasons, even if it was to protect her? Or how she tampered with the Alzheimer’s clinical trial?

Her ever-loving boyfriend Andrew DeLuca had tried to convince Meredith to go for the court case, but Meredith was in full mama-bear mode and told him to back off and questioned how he could even think she would leave Zola and go to court. Well, now you see.

MerDeLuca has already faced its fair share of twists in this season, as DeLuca had earlier told her off for her impulsiveness and rash-decision making. Guess suddenly her self-destructiveness didn’t seem all that sexy anymore, does it DeLuca?

Nothing is ever easy on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’,  so Meredith’s jail time is sure to affect her relationship with DeLuca. They’ve been having it surprisingly a little too easy. What will the writers bring their way, this time? More importantly, given the history of fan-favorite couples being destroyed on this show, will MerDeLuca survive this?
