'Grey's Anatomy' season 16: Caterina Scorsone on Amelia's shocking pregnancy twist and what it is like to carry her past

The second episode 'Back in the Saddle' confirmed that Amelia is having Link's baby and it looks like Amelia is fairly over her grieving for baby Christopher.

One of the biggest twists in season 16 of 'Grey's Anatomy' is Amelia Shepherd's (Caterina Scorsone) unexpected pregnancy. The second episode 'Back in the Saddle' confirmed that Amelia is having Link's (Chris Carmack) baby. Although he was shocked at first, he did lend all his support to Amelia. The two confessed to each other their fears — especially because Amelia lost Baby Christopher in the past after he was born without a brain due to a genetic disorder.

"Yeah, Amelia talking about Christopher brings up the big Private Practice feels," one of Caterina's tweets read. The two readied themselves for the responsibility after a heart-to-heart chat, and she told him, "You and I, we are gonna make an amazing kid and I kinda want to meet him," to which he responded, "I think I want to meet him too."

In an interview with Refinery29, Caterina said, "Amelia and Link are for sure jumping in. They’re both pretty adventurous, high adrenaline souls, so they are going to leap and have this baby and figure out the pieces as they go." She added, "I think Amelia is more prepared to have a baby now for a lot of reasons. When she and Owen broke up over having or not having kids, she hadn’t had the experience of parenting Leo and Betty. She also had a lot of trauma from the loss of baby Christopher that she hadn’t processed. Before they broke up, she wasn’t even able to say his name out loud, let alone share her pain with anyone, including Owen."

Amelia Shepherd and Link have a heart-to-heart chat in the second episode of 'Grey's Anatomy' Season 16!

"Speaking about one’s pain and trauma can be incredibly healing, and I think a combination of her grieving Christopher properly and parenting Leo and Betty with so much love, a lot of Amelia’s fear and trauma was healed," she also said.

When one fan asked her, "Is it hard to carry amelia's past into acting? I mean like, knowing that she's been through a lot and she probably has a lot of triggers and stuff," she replied saying, "It’s heavy sometimes but also an enormous privilege to get to play so many layers of the same person over so much time. An aspect of this craft that we rarely get a chance to play with. I get to do it thanks to you fans watching and loving the show."

After reading her tweet, one fan wrote: "She’s by far the most layered and interesting character I've ever seen. you really make me feel for her every single episode and I relate to her in ways I never thought I would. thank you for bringing to life my absolute favorite character and giving me so much hope through her." And another one posted, "This is definitely the best character development of the whole show. @caterinatweets is extraordinary. her portrayal of Amelia is just perfect. See how her character has grown and matured from the rebellious girl turning into the mature and wise woman is something simply magical."

This season, another baby is coming on board the longest-running medical drama on ABC. The third episode airs on Thursday, October 10 on ABC.
