In practically every romantic comedy or show we've ever seen, being friends with benefits almost always morphs into something deeper. One or both of the people involved starts to fall in love. We have to wonder if 'Grey's Anatomy' will follow that predictable path with Dr Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) and Dr Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams). While the two are intentionally keeping the relationship light for now, in spite of the heavy relationship baggage they both carry, how long can it remain uncomplicated?

Jesse Williams who plays Dr Jackson Avery thinks that while it's all fun and games for now, there is potential for some serious heartbreak. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Williams spoke about the Jo Jackson relationship, “We’re keeping it light, but this could go badly at any moment. I think that it’s tricky, and that makes it fun to play. They’re both a bit of a mess. They both have had failure in their romantic lives. And rejection. Insecurity comes with that, and that’s real.

So where will we find Jo and Jackson's relationship when Season 17 of 'Grey's Anatomy' returns to our screens? Williams says in an interview with Access said, “It’s kind of this cool, mature approach to soothing and not making too much of something. This is obviously where, traditionally, lines get blurred and people catch feelings. There’s a lot of ways for this to go messy."

Messy or not, the actors who play them are enjoying the comic chemistry they share. While Jesse Williams has described it as a 'comedic tightrope', Camilla Luddington in an interview with Entertainment Tonight said, "Jesse and I have a lot of fun together. We have always pitched like, please put some scenes together, please make them funny scenes, like we'd love to like joke around together. And then these ended up happening. I had no idea until Krista Vernoff, our showrunner, said to us, 'Oh, I'm gonna put you guys together for this like really fun hook up,' and then I didn't know where it was going. I still don't really know where it's going to be honest."

Jo and Jackson certainly deserve a little joy in their romantic lives. After all, they have obviously not had the best of luck romantically. They've both had their great big love stories with Alex Karev and with April Kepner which didn't end up with a happily ever after.

In fact, Williams still seems to be hoping for a Jackson April reunion. With rumors of an April Kepner comeback on 'Grey's Anatomy' we have to wonder what that means for any real romance with Jo and Jackson. Williams on a 'Japril' reunion told Entertainment Tonight that he would love an opportunity to continue the Jackson April story because they "have an ability to communicate and be vulnerable with each other and push each other." So does that mean that Jo Wilson is the one who could get her heart broken once again? We know that April is now married to Matthew but both Williams and Sarah Drew who plays April Kepner have said in interviews they feel Jackson and April are end game.

Well for now at least for Jo and Jackson, this arrangement seems to be all about getting through a challenging time in a post-pandemic world. To find out if it morphs into more you can tune in as Season 17 of 'Grey's Anatomy' returns to ABC on March 11, Thursday at 9|8c.
