Golden Globes 2021: Andra Day wins Best Actress Drama, fans shocked 'she beat Viola Davis and Carey Mulligan'

Many were surprised that Day won over stalwarts such as Frances McDormand and Viola Davis, who many expected would win the award

The Golden Globes 2021 ceremony is being watched by thousands as of now, and rightly so. The Covid-19 pandemic had affected the production of the show, but the anticipation for one of Hollywood's biggest nights remained. The ceremony is being hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler at Rainbow Room in New York and Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, respectively. With the nominees from the categories revealed on February 3, 2021, there was a lot to be excited about.

John Boyega took home the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for 'Small Axe' and Catherine O'Hara took home the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Musical or Comedy for 'Schitt's Creek'. Of course, 'Soul' winning Best Motion Picture — Animated was almost 100 per cent expected, and now we're almost at the end of the ceremony.

Fans have been joyously following the winners of the categories and as we near the end of the awards, Andra Day won the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama for 'The United States vs. Billie Holiday'. It is the second last award of the ceremony and turns out that Day's win, although deserved, shocked people considering the other nominations in the category.

Other nominees for the category included Viola Davis for 'Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom', Andra Day for 'The United States vs. Billie Holiday', Vanessa Kirby for 'Pieces of a Woman', Frances McDormand for 'Nomadland' and Carey Mulligan for 'Promising Young Woman'.

"Cannot believe andra day beat viola davis AND carey mulligan i didn’t expect this at all...," wrote one fan. Another added, "Andra Day for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama, EASILY the biggest surprise of the night. No words. #GoldenGlobes." Another added, "jaw hit the floor when i heard andra day i loved the movie but how did she beat carey mulligan and viola davis the front runner in the category and she was 5th."



 



 



 

Others were simply happy for Day, with one fan writing, "Five years ago I was first hearing Andra Day’s voice on another awards show. And now here I am watching her win on the #GoldenGlobes." Another added, "Curious to see the Billie Holiday movie....Andra Day must’ve really killed it if she beat out Viola Davis, who was phenomenal (as usual) in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” #GoldenGlobes."



 



 

The official 2021 Golden Globe Awards was telecasted on February 28 at 8 pm ET and the pre-show was streamed live from the official @GoldenGlobes Twitter account and on the website goldenglobes.com at 6.30 pm ET.
